The stats page is great already, but I'd love to see how long someone spent reading the chapter. This would also help to weed out rating abuse, for one star bombing, and artificial 5 star inflation. I just got a slew of one stars on the twentieth on 3 of my stories, all
Fanfics that haven't been updated in months, from someone who has only ever clicked on my most recently posted chapter, never having read any others. Now a brand new account from a self proclaimed lurker just dropped a bunch of 5 stars in retaliation.

I don't really think either is legitimate, and don't like how the rating are so easily abused.

Some already suggest different rating systems like you.

I don't know bout you, but some folks here prefer the current rating system.

Because we've been coping with rating abuse for a long time.

There is no system that really fixes the issue, and every addition has just as many upsides as downsides.

In the specific case of this proposal, there has been more than a few times where I read less than two sentences before giving a legitimate 1-star review. Granted, most of those were completely unreadable due to massive numbers of basic spelling, grammar, and syntax mistakes...

But IMO, the rating system we have now is something I prefer have.

I don't know why, but being able to just ignore the harsh ratings and hateful comments made me feel at ease.

Not sure useful "time in chapter" would be - I have a few that I started reading a chapter one day then moved off, or had to go to bed or got called out of the room and did not get back to for a few days (at least one I never got back to even). Unless I am a very rare exception to the norm, it would be just as useful as the current system.

I think royal road does it best by forcing an actual review, not just a rating. Even webnovel requires something to be written not just a rating.

I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. I don't even jnderstand how someone is allowed to rate a story without even having read the first chapter. It's obviously ripe for abuse. At the very least, forcing an actual written review would help filter out some of the less than honest or biased ratings by forcing them to write objective reasoning.

This will also help authors improve, vs simply discouraging them.
