This has been bothering me for a while, and I want to know if it bothers you too.

It's said that imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Not that anyone would, but damn, if someone wanted to make a fanfic of one of my novels and then cuck my MC with their OC and use all my FMCs as meat toilets, I would ask politely that they link me to their work, and link back to mine as well.

it's poorly thought out legal protection. They don't understand copyright law well enough to realize that, that does nothing to protect them. The minute they started accepting "donations" for their work involvijg other IP's, it shifted from fair use to plagiarism. Examples would be games workshop, and then suing anyone who uses their IP without being licensed.

As for the picture thing, most people don't even know where they got pictures from, being either too lazy or unknowledgeable to find it themselves. Throw in a healthy dose of narcissism as well. It's infuriating, but there's little to do bout it
I mean, you are not wrong on the fact that fanfics shouldn't be works that authors writing such works should be paid for. I believe that it is up to sites that allow author to receive donations like Patreon to make a major investigation into the stories uploaded on their sites to ensure that there are no fanfics on their platform and take major actions to prevent fanfic writers from writing on their websites. Otherwise, I don't think that people who write fanfics will stop posting their fanfics on their websites.

Yes, I agree as well. Because from what I have been able to observe, the people who simply post a certain picture from the internet as their cover page outnumber those that actually commission their cover pages or ask for consent from the artist that drew the pictures they use as cover pages or even drew the cover pages themselves( which is very rare).

I feel like my initial point has strayed, patreon doesn’t bother me, or fanfics in general.

What bothers me is that in many fanfic synopsis, where the webnovel author has completely stolen everything from the original creator, they make the point to say “the OC’s are mine.”

This irony does not even seem to be present when that same fanfic then uses stolen art for their covers.

If that webnovel author (of which there are many) see’s it as totally fine to not only use/bastardize someone else’s original work but also someone’s art, just how shameless is it for that webnovel author to then claim ‘ownership’ of their 2-dimensional OC protagonists?

Furthermore, using their own rules, what recourse could that webnovel author even have if someone used their OC in a different story?

It just doesn’t make sense, and that’s what bothers me.

Who cares?

Damn, you actively looking for a reason to be litigious instead of bringing joy to the masses with shitty fanfics full of mary sue and gary stu OCs?

It's a fanfic. Just let sonic the hedgehog mpreg your OC, and move on. Everyone else has already accepted it as standard operating procedure on the internet by now. You new to it or something?

I was trying to write a fanfic and haven't published it yet. Reading this thread makes me doubt myself. Fanfic is almost heresy if not for the demand in the market. Still, sometimes, I think there really are fanfic authors who can write an honest to good fanfic story, with no smut, no sacrilege of the canon, and most importantly, no meaningless sex.

I believe good fanfics take research in a very hardcode mode. I particularly like a certain Skyrim fanfic which honestly had a rough start, especially with the annoying meaningless sex but it still grew on me. There is also a certain one-piece fanfic that also grew to me, which respects the canon and the original characters of the anime. What I find disgusting though are the naruto fanfics on the net that are pure self-wish fulfillment garbage.

I can resonate with what is bothering you. Really, but sometimes we are powerless to change that. Not unless you try writing one?
Meh... I was trying to goad you, alright? Hahaha...

I like fanfics, again, my point was not to disparage them or talk about patreon in general.

It was the single point that in a work were the webnovel author steals everything, including the cover art, it bothers me that they write down that they ‘own’ their OC’s. (Like all that other stuff is fine to take, but you’d better not take their OC)

The legality part of the discussion came when the first person said “well they do own their original characters”. In my opinion, I don’t know what that means when it comes to fanfics due to what restrictions there already are when dealing with copy righted material.

Like if I was going to rip off some Dragon Ball merchandise, would I use some webnovel fanfic’s OC? It just doesn’t make sense lol

I think it could apply, because there are fanfics that use other OCs from other fanfics. I mean they are not that many in number, but they do exist.

What is the title of this fanfic? I would like to check it out.

title of this fanfic
One Piece Talent System. I particularly liked this fanfic because of its accuracy and most of all, it doesn't have a harem.
