Well yes, unreasonable 1* happens, but so do unreasonable 5*. I find it distasteful when people complain about 1* and discredit them for being a troll, despite the lack of any evidence.
I can also agree with those unreasonable 5*s. Simply showering it with praise isn't gonna do it any good, but the same applies to criticism. If you wanna leave an ultra bad/good rating at least give some sort of reasoning behind it.

Unfortunately we're so conditioned with praise, whether it be undeserved or not, we just blindly accepted it. Not that it's any bad, but it isn't anything good either.

It does give that "peck the button and get the corn" dopamine rush so I guess that's that.

Anyway, the rating is purely subjective. People will give a good rating to what they like, and give a bad rating to what they don't like. Ben just doesn't write what people like, and the story with little 1* rating just has what people tend to love.
Hey, what's not to like about bipedal animals beating the absolute shit out of each other?

I would contest this claim. Praising is a cultural thing. There are cultures that praise everything, even average works. And there are cultures that only praise exceptional work. Everything else is not worthy of praise.

Is praise good or bad? I need to see the data first before making a decision.

Specifically, what are the effects of praise (deserved or not) on human productivity and quality of the material produced. For example, perhaps praise has the effect of encouraging creators to produce more work and that in turn provides them with experience to produce higher quality works.

My Personal Opinion: Increased productivity and quality of creations is favourable to reduced productivity and quality, thus actions that promote increased productivity and quality of creations are preferable.

The data would tell me whether praising or not praising would be the optimal solution for my desired result.

The opposite of praise is criticism. I would also like to see the data on the effects of criticism.

Objectively speaking, there's no downside to simply praising for productivity. I mean, results speak for themselves.

Subjectively speaking, there's an inherent quality of manipulation behind the tiny dopamine rush from seeing another 5 star on your story, or simply being kissed in the ass. Intentionally or not, I don't like that.
