I would hope no one is actually paying money to these "translators"
Pretty much all unauthorized translators have a Ko-fi, SubscribeStar, Patreon, etc.

legitimate translation groups found on NovelUpdates
Many of those are also unauthorized translations. Since NovelUpdates is only a repository of links rather than a host for the stories, the NU site isn't at risk of being taken down (only the places that the link sends you to are at risk).

I would hope no one is actually paying money to these "translators", especially when the actual, legitimate translation groups found on NovelUpdates aren't doing this as a cheap grift.
Based on some Patreon profiles from the works we took down, the average income is around $4k, with the highest being $23k (or was it 28? Don't remember) monthly.
And reporting them to Patreon, even if you provide all sources and other necessary info, does jack shit. They require you, the reporter, to be the owner of the original to even consider it.
It pissess me off.

There are still small true fan translations that don't make a living from translating and care for the original work. Though they get smaller day by day. :blob_teary:

It's because of the sheer speed and quantity that AI translators provide.

Authors and even real translators can't keep up. They can't release like 100-200 chapters a month....

It's kinda funny that AI works outearn real authors/translators by a factor of 10 to 100. It's insane.

This is the Epstein Files of the writing scene and y'all not mad enough
I don't even know how we'd even start prosecuting people for profiting off illegal translations, honestly. It's probably people in third-world countries stealing original works from China.
