Shogi is just chess but with fewer players. You might as well start with chess or go, as they have much larger playerbases.

On this Shogi is predominantly played in Japan, Go is predominantly played in east Asia with European and American leauges, and Chess is more popular then both except maybe in China, the Koreas, and Japan.

Regardless of where their country of origin is, a game with an approximate 7 million players (shogi) is going to have fewer noobs than a game with over 24 million players (go); therefore, one has an easier time finding even matchups on the more popular game.
