You can claim the Europe was being a jerk by making many small countries rather than 1 united nation, but at the end of the day its thanks to western Europeans keeping their word that they didn't end up with a few more decades of colonialism.

and you're mixing things up a bit, during WW1 the UK and France made a deal with the Arabs in the Middle East to divide the Ottoman Empire, but they didn’t keep their promise. Instead, both the UK and France took control of the region.
After WWII, these countries gained independence: either through revolution (like Egypt and Iraq) or because the UK and France, under pressure from the UN, couldn’t afford to hold onto so many territories.
it was a strategic loss to keep fighting for control and risk losing their armies, so they opted to grant physical independence but not economic independence.

This is not true at all. Their navy is still top-tier; Scotland has always hated the English, and they are still one of the most developed nations in Europe. When another country gets mad at them, they have to call up the entire EU to put pressure on the UK.

No navy is hyperbole for effect, but I wouldn't say top tier. More like the aging remnants of something that was once great but is less and less capable with every passing year. I don't see that improving considering the lack of an industrial base and resource pool.

But still better than the Russian navy, that's a thing!
