The inherent toxicity in the online space

Wow... This thread opened my eyes to the fact that each and every site's audience and members (not talking about the moderators), whether Qidian, RR, Scribblehub, have their own pros, but also negativity...

My takeaway from this is take every comment with a grain of salt, learn what you deem useful, and do what you want if you're not hurting anyone. And for specific interaction in these communities: objective criticism and negative criticism can be helpful but only give respect when you are given respect, ignore and don't take shit from rants and hate comments, find people who are sane, exhibit human decency, and also honest enough to tell the truth.

Does anyone have any more to add to this?

I dont think yall be touched in a weird places so ya should probably be at ease.
Probably.
Hey! You don't know! I have been added to Convos and Private DM where I just open to NSFW that I had to report! :blob_no:

Anyway...

I think the comparison of RR compare to SH is quite interesting

like RR refuses to moderate toxic content
So I went to see if that is true. While I am not entirely sure how well they put their lack of moderation into practice since I don't frequent that site myself, I did see a few interesting things.

in March 2019 the site tried to create some reprieve for authors in the form of author moderation of their own comments
The options are fairly straightforward:
  • Blocking Private Messages prevents the user from sending you any messages
  • Hiding Comments makes any comment by that user invisible to you
  • Blocking Comments prevents the user from making a comment on any of your fictions

tho the blog post did make it clear, that even tho, from the point of the authors the can block anyone from commenting, the ongoing problem of readers spamming authors with messages of harassment will not stop.

And in the comments underneath the blog post, the admin did state that review and review trolling is not at that point something that will be interfered with, in consideration for the abuse of authors should them have the power over their own reviews

The authors, however, feared that should they block harassers they will take their harassment to the reviews and bomb that section as a way of attacking the author.

The admin did mention that a function is in the future to let the author hid review from their own experience of the site, however still visible to the community at large

Next update after that
an Author and reader reputation system was created.

Next update of note 30 September 2020
New(?) review rules have in added
New(?) code of conduct and way of interacting have been added

RR refuses to moderate
While their success is hard for me to gauge, I feel that they are trying. But it appears they are a great advocate in that reader's impression must be known.... the reviewing system is important.

Which as a concept... I don't think its wrong to hold that as a foundation of a community, it is just one of the many possible ways of building a community... I personally don't think that is a good thing to focus on.... but my reason and theories are my own.

And what I am about to say is purely opinion and by no means the truth... But the sense I get... is the RR is not built for authors. it built for readers... if that makes sense... and SH I feel is a place build more with the author in mind and reader needs are placed in the second.

If I am just making a baseless conjecture, I'd say there are more authors than readers on SH and vice versa on RR.

But I could easily be wrong, but that is how I feel about the power dynamics in the two sites.

Anyway, that was an interesting thing to dive into...

The world can be a mean place (It can also be a nice place but people choose to be blind to it). And honestly, if this forum is anything to take from I'd rather take the mean world. It's just a bunch of authors whining about readers half the time that I don't gain anything out of here than I get when I just spend more time writing for myself.

Thanks for this. I'm not informed about the specifics about these sites. If I'll take your word for it then I feel agreeing with you.

It would be much better if reviewers need credibility to make reviews and a rep system is a step towards that. If I had to make comparison, it's kinda like the concept of educated and capable voting so that the leaders elected are proper and capable, instead of being propagandists and fame-manipulators.

Yeah~ I fully admit. I skimmed the RR threads very quickly and might have missed a few things and my perspective is probably not the full picture. At the end of the day Is hard to say for sure without living there.
Glad you took it well. It's just my way of being cautious and considerate of the party I'm talking about because I've been burned before by trusting certain opinions without doing the proper research/having a complete view of the situation.

Ehh, I get abused, both physically and mentally, a lot. So to be honest, I don't really get the whole "this hurts me" thing. If it hurts you, ignore it.

However, the tactic doesn't work with bullies, because they see themselves as superior and am now chasing a prey, trust me when I say that getting dragged out of your classroom to get your nose bridge broken is not fun, especially when you become a fun topic for people to talk about.
Ignoring it doesn't work, my sister and I were nearly pushed to considering suicide because of our father's narcissistic girlfriend's abuse, and both of us have lasting problems because of it. So yeah, ignoring it is not the solution, our solution was running away, seeking shelter at our mother's place over 100Km away, and even that only partially helped...

*shrugs* I don't let toxicity from strangers on the internet get to me. If it's someone I know in real life, it hurts more. Otherwise, I just block and move on.

I don't like the layout of the RR forum for some reason. I can't remember why, but SH has a much cleaner layout, and I like the way the notifications work here, so that's what kept me motivated to post here, and then I met some lovely people here.
"I just block and move on." that's not the solution, not by a long shot, when you get stalked by the same person using a multitude of accounts, and even if the admins do ban them, they just pop up on a new IP with another account. Because that's exactly what is happening to one of my dear friends right now.

*Throw another log in to the fire*

I wonder if people that went to private time will ever come back... Will they bring illuminations to the purpose of this thread?

This thread also single-handedly proves that people here are also toxic.
