As a reader the best magic for me is the kind that help drives the story along.

After reading a few dozen stories that go into some hard magic system in detail I kind of now almost prefer magic to be a bit more... magical.

I like the simple stuff, that came daily life a breeze, a clean up spell, a magic hand that can lift things for you, small flame, could easily make the world more manageable.

But if we're talking real magic is say barrier magic.

• Contract Magic, to make everybody immortal and not murderous or evil.
• Healing Magic, for curing diseases, healing injuries, and resurrecting the dead.
• Shapeshifting, no explanation needed.
• Mind Magic, to enhance my mind. Especially useful if you're in a grumpy universe where shapeshifting into something makes you as dumb as that thing without mind magic.
• Daily Magic is very important for people who live daily lives.

All the other magics are really useful, and I will always try to get access to them when possible. I would be pretty upset if I couldn't use any of them for some reason. But the above are the ones I would probably rely on most.

As a reader the magic I think is most interesting to have in a fantasy story is teleportation and regeneration.

Teleportation magic allows you to easily see different landscapes and environments without a ton chapters dedicated to travel, or a large amount of time skipped between pages.

Regeneration allows you have more visceral fight scenes with visible damage without having to hinder the character in the long term. Even if a character survives a fight and recovers completely the damage they suffered can add stakes and show just how close to death they were.

Hard but relatively simple in practice. Brandon Sanderson is known for this. He took about half of one chapter to explain in broad strokes how allomancy works, and only really went into more detail when we see a specialist.
“Eating Pewter makes you big stronk” is all you really need to say and someone knows 10% of the magic system. There’s a lot more complexity later but it’s introduced a little at a time.

Generally manipulation. Can be just something simple like fire manipulation, or something more fancy or with wider or deeper scope.

Note that this kind of magic is often called a number of different names depending on the setting.

Elemental magic. Of elemental magic, I'm quite the fan of the storm trio (Water, Air, and Lightning) individually or together, and Space. Dark too, very aesthetic n cool, but I'm having difficulties with it as of late because it doesn't make sense as an element in the same way the other elements do.

Wish-granting, perhaps. But also hex and curses, and regular fae trickery.

My favorite element is Ice. Oh, and I like healing and Space-Time magic too.

Really contrived sex magic
