Suave Leader or Tyrant

Let's say you read a story where the MC is the son of a lord. Do you think having the lord be a suave leader who cares for his people or a tyrant would open up more story opportunities? Which would open up more opportunities for the story? I'm asking out of curiosity and wondering which I should make a lord in my story.

They're both fine, but it probably depends on what opportunities you are looking for.

A suave leader can introduce your character to his subjects and acquaintances, while a tyrant can create tension and danger.

Yes, and those diplomatic relationships include marriage.

Well, that depends.

Do you want your MC to start with loyal subjects of his father but be burdened with his father's image and expectations of others or to be hunted like a dog and hated by all, where he will be wearing a stigma that he is the spawn of satan?

So basically, rigid life but all your needs taken care of or life and death daily but at least you are free-ish.

It really depends on how well you can execute it.

Take a different approach. Make the Lord someone who values practical solutions. Happy subjects are productive subjects, so he lowers taxes. Having a lower overhead for his household means he is able to spend his revenues on other projects, so he has a garden that he himself toils on, including his children. The largest population of his people tend sheep, so he regularly visits shepards to understand tend, sheering, slaughter.

This can lead to some seemingly heartless decisions, as well.
