Hello all,
I had a bit of a conundrum on my hands and was wondering what you all think. Not asking for a solution of my problem but for more of a "what would you do?" type deal. My answer is already been found and I've made my decision but I thought it would be a fun question to present to the forum.
Story titles are a big part of our novels, if not the most important piece. They are the first things your Readers see, aside from the cover art and your name of course. It's meant to give a brief, tiny idea of what may be happening within the pages inside said cover and act as either an invitation or a deterrent (deterrent to keep those out who we know won't like the story anyways). I actually am heavily influenced by story titles and cover art pairings. One example is how I passed over almost 90% of a shelf at my local bookstore the other day because the art and titles weren't attractive.
With that in mind, the issue is this; you start with one title and cover and you begin your story. Several chapters down the line, the story begins to shift a little and you find it taking a different turn than you planned. Then, a little more time passes and now it's as though you're on an entirely different island, so to say. The title of your story isn't quite as descriptive of the story within as you originally thought. However, by this point it's well established and you have a decent following beneath it. It's likely a story that has plenty of eyes on it aside from your follower base and it is recognizable in the sense that if the name were to change, it may either get lost or people would go "what?". Of course, you could always just ask your followers as well to see what they think. We write for their enjoyment and our own pleasure, of course, so having mutual feelings on it might be beneficial before making such a change.
You already have a new title picked out, or you feel like there might be a title more fitting to the story and have begun to brain storm a little. Do you change the title? Or do you stick to what you originally came up with?
