I have been toying with this idea.

post apocalyptic setting, MC is a barbarian guy from the waste, who travels around between the safe areas, getting into problems and solving others. Not a good guy, but a force of chaos.

but the catch

It is always from other peoples perspectives.

You never hear the MCs thoughts or opinions unless he vocalizes them to others.

He takes a barmaid to bed, her pov. Gets into a gruesome fight with some locals, its the pov of the man he rips the arms off of, or the town guard that comes by later to clean up the mess. MC is alone gathering information/stealing stuff in a vacant room, spider on the wall. It would be anyone but the MC.

I am pretty sure this has been done before but I am curious about others thoughts on the idea of not knowing the inner thoughts of the MC

As with every idea, the deciding factor is how well it's written. To pull this off, each chapter would essentially need to be its own self-contained short story starring the current pov character that just so happens to intercect with the barbarian guy at one point or another. Otherwise you're just going to be head hopping into every character EXCEPT the one everyone is supposed to care about.

Fun concept, but I agree with Adam, it's about the delivery, not just the concept. As long as you write it well, it does sound kinda cool, though.

My novel also rarely focuses on the main protagonist's inner monologue. FMC's portrayal is instead perceived through the people around her: her little daughter, the detective girl, grandma of the fruit seller, the knights, and even the boy whom she saved. I wanted to maintain the charisma and mysterious aura of FMC, who is a legendary former bloody executioner feared by the world before the apocalypse.

The more times you self-plug, the more interested I get about your book. Wish I had your confidence.

I don't always promote my novels. I'll only provide a link if the thread mentions them (either directly or indirectly). I try to provide answers that are relevant to the thread's question. However, promoting novels is also perfectly acceptable.

As a challenge, you could have him traveling with another companion, perhaps female, someone more down to Earth, not as wild and more headstrong. This would allow him to eventually change and develop.

Even if well done, it might not ever be popular, but you could still have fun writing it. Not everything you do has to be for mass market appeal.

Yeah.

It will be more of a short story anyways, a dark comedy.
Dude is essentially Conan crossed with the Doomslayer. Barbarian from the wilds to the north, uses a hockey stick for a weapon (world regressed a lot. Very few viable firearms/ammo left)

But I digress, I already have two works on the go. I just wanted some others opinions on a a writing from that POV.

I am kinda liking your deity entertainment network idea. I am working on a similar story, where the protagonist is death, who was 'rewarded' by being stuffed into a broken body on a dying, post-apocalypse world for being too good at his job. The deity entertainment setup are the bad guys :)

Haha, yeah DEN is my favorite right now. I read something with a similar idea, but I wanted to change it up to be more like an actual game show and have the MC be an old guy with a broken body and early onset Alzheimer's.

MFGR I enjoy a lot as well, but I can see where I messed up early on in the writing.

I also started a OG instead of a fanfic, but that will be a different can of worms once it gets going :)

Have you considered putting links to your stories in your sig? I will often feel more of a connection with stories whose authors I have interacted with here, until they move to Amazon and the 'big leagues'.

That doesn't mean I will like them, but I will definitely give them a chance :)

I suppose I could. Didn't really consider it earlier
