Stay constant or go for a change

This is mostly for readers, but it can be applied to writers here as well.

Would you enjoy your fav author to change his standard formula once in a while?

For the record, the change doesn't have to be drastic, like an author who wrote the R18 Cave of Obscenity also wrote the Seven Yuushas story, I liked neither. It can just be a slight change, like Get Lost who is used to writing stoic MC gaining system and become OP to writing a wimpy MC.

Personally, I dislike the change because of suckish execution with the shift being jarring and awkward, even more so when midway, the author tries to go back into their standard format.

If you mean changing it in the middle of one story, then it can be a good change of pace. I can't really say if I would like it, but I would definitely be more invested in the story because of more things to think about.
I think it's the best if that change is not intentional, because in that case the shift is not so jarring and more natural.

If you mean writing another story with another formula... well, I'd see what it is, at the very least. I found out that favorite authors are very good to introduce you to another kind of stories you never knew existed.

I want my fav author to just write what they enjoy creating.
Nothing worse than someone writing by the numbers because they see the need to change to a different style/genre.
Given that I mostly read long-running series, I have no problem reading "similar styles" over and over again, as long as the characters and stories develop...

I encourage such ventures but only when on a different story as I can just decide not to read from chapter 1. In the same story I’m way more strict.

For a different stories, I’ve always thought just because an author consistently writes one style does not mean it’s the one that comes most naturally to them. To discover which one the authors best at or enjoys the most requires experimentation. I also think that even if it doesn’t work out, there’s almost always something for the author to learn. It also helps that I’ve grown immune from seeing stories that are bad from the start.

But while in the same story, it can ruin the feel of a story. I would actively discourage it unless the current style of writing is in need of improvement and/or the change is done carefully and over a period of time. I think dragon idol did alright with changes, if only because it needed improvement (I believe it was the multiple minds thing). Full dive: eternal phantasy did worse. That left me feeling like the author wanted to write 2-3 stories but somehow ended up with 1.

True that, Am I a God made me interested in Bear Wolf Dog's attempt on comedy... as well as the fact that he put his cat (deceased in midst of his fifth work, may it rest in peace) in as MC that caught my attention. Sadly, his fifth and sixth works lost the charm and I could never picked them up.

Similar to Get Lost and Er Gen, some of their works are bangers to me, some failed to stick.

If you are talking about genre whiplash between projects, Mangaka Peach Pit was somewhat extreme. DearS was about a servant race of space succubus refugees. They turned around and later drew Shugo Chara, a magical girl manga targeting a particularly young shoujo demographic, starring a 9 year old .
