Sometimes I want a reader to tell me why they dropped a story.

When you post a new chapter and all of a sudden one or two people drop due to the contents of that chapter.

And that some readers have reading list sections with different titles. They have a dropped section and another section that says 'toxic' or 'yikes' or something.

Makes one wonder what is so bad that you not only drop a story, but place it the toxic section that is basically Kakashi's worst than trash motto.

It's not always good. I have no problem with people silently walking away. It is much better than getting someone who brings up points that are:

- invalid because later on in the plot, it gets explained
- missing the point on something or simply ignoring the tags and synopses and starting to complain because it is not something they wanted
- drawing conjectures from 2 to 4 chapters on a story's events and coming up with wrongly perceived conclusions without knowing how they truly play out in a 100+ chapter story.

I could list more, but my point, the TL;DR, is:

I prefer people simply drop it without making a fuss instead of getting angry if I try to reply to or explain their points. It just turns into 1star ratings out of spite. So far, no people who told me they "dropped my story because [...]" had any points that I felt were something valid or something that I would go, "I can see your point."

Not every story is for everyone, and that is fine.

At the very bottom; and at the very top. There are two (and probably more) ways to stalk your readers.

Hi! I've done both, just walking away from a story as well as adding them to a curated dropped list if I don't even want to see them in my searches. I'm strongly opinionated on certain subjects (for example, slavery, suicide, and child abuse) so when they're broached, they can cause a story to become unreadable to me. I block related tags from my searches, but the subjects sometimes come up anyway. That isn't necessarily the fault of the story, there are those who look for the sorts of things I don't want to read. They're nonetheless valid reasons to stop reading on my part. I've left comments a few times on stories which went in a direction that caused me to drop them, but in retrospect I don't believe it contributed in any meaningful way to post my personal opinion. Write the story you want and i'll read (or not) what I want. Isn't that how it's supposed to work?

Honestly, the labels on those dropped lists should be private. They"re orgazational tools and reminders of why I stopped reading. If they're not private despite having hidden my reading lists, I suppose the stalkers get what they were looking for? ;)

They are private if you set them that way.

I would like to know the why, as it would give me insight as to where I might be lacking as an author. Knowing what I've done wrong, where my deficiencies are, and where I can improve are definitely nice.

However, I've learned to just keep trucking because it's not worth the effort. I'm not looking to write a bestseller or some 10/5 novel that has no flaws. I'm here for the people who want to enjoy a story, point out some grammar errors or ask a couple questions so I can keep things centered, and who like the book for what it is. Anyone else who goes in to pick it apart can go find something else for a hobby.

terrible foreshadowing
he pledged to himself that he would do everything in his power to protect his family, litle did he know that his actions will cause the death of his entire family in the future
not killing off a character for the sake of plot.

danzo from naruto fanfics is an extremly common target for this, but ill give a different example. their is a hxh fanfic where the protagonist is a part of phantom trope during the auction slaughter, he knows about kurapika because, reincarnation plot, he encounters kurapika after the slaughter starts, and instead of killing him, he just lets him escape after warning him to give up on his revenge....even though he was a part of slaughtering his clan.

their are just some things that completly destroy a story thats impossible to recover from and im too lazy to do a full breakdown of whats good/bad in a story....exspecially one ive given up on

Same. Getting to know the why is super helpful for the same reason you said. However, if it's something related to what Corty said in the thread, it's pointless to fight or defend your work. Just let those readers walk away without a fuss. It may feel bad, but it's no use spending effort in fights over something you're not exactly trying to "write a bestseller" for.

GOD I hate that type of foreshadowing, breaks my expectations completely.
"Little did he know that his actions has consequences" Duh????

Me too, friend. Although, I sort of know the answer in my case. I am a chapter spammer. Today I have written and uploaded 5 chapters in total. Nothing can stop me! Long live the binge reader breed!
