Dragons. Nobody ever writes them interesting.
My dragons are little and cute and like chasing birds and building sandcastles and baking cookies. And also! Some of them are fluffy. So there. :blob_uwu:

I think elves are kind of boring, at least in Asian fiction. They're all written pretty much the same. The other classic fantasy races are, too, but the elves are probably the most common and, in my opinion, the most annoying.

I like using traditional fantasy creatures with some kind of added twist (like making dragons friendly and cat-sized), so most of mine aren't that mysterious. Revenants are one that's portrayed as sort of mysterious in the story, though. They're spectral creatures who eat magic. They don't have a physical body of their own, but they possess the corpses of other magical creatures, which they use as both a shelter (like a hermit crab) and a disguise in order to get close to living members of that species so they can find food. They're mainly scavengers, so they eat things like shed scales or feathers that have some magic power in them. But they'll also kill and eat young or weak magic creatures if they get the chance. They can absorb some of the memories of the creatures whose bodies they possess, which helps with their disguise, but the more memories they take in, the more unstable their personalities become. If it gets too bad, they can even forget that they're revenants, which usually leads to them either starving because they stop eating magic or blowing their cover and getting killed by the creatures they're trying to live with.

Unicorns, they are just thin rhinos with added additions. Looking pass the "they can cure anything" they are just really boring.

Same with Bicorns, just goats with a bigger bodies. Still assholes.

Technically from a language perspective, rhinos are unicorns.

I think I'm at the point where everything is a little boring, even the Super Unique Custom Creations™️ of really talented imaginers. Obviously humans are the standout, but it's not like I can blame people for that.

I also don't really want to make my creatures 'mysterious', because I want to brag about how cool they are. At least, when I'm not just enjoying the cliché old critters like fairies and animal-kin.

Anything that fills the generic "good guys/bad guys race" role is overdone, no matter how different your race of nuclear-powered cyborg-rodent zombie-orc-nazi-werewolf-vampires on steroids are. If the whole race is either full good or evil, they're boring.

Most original stuff I invented for my story are semi-sentinent objects that create contracts with people to emulate them in order to get the chance to form a soul so they can either get reborn as living being or possess their bearer without anybody noticing (which is more like an extra life than real possession since they more or less are the same as their cointract partner).

Disagree. I for one would love to see someone pull an entirely good race of nuclear-powered cyborg-rodent zombie-orc-nazi-werewolf-vampires on steroids off.

My point still stands

I'll never get tired of demons, the "sell me your soul for eternal damnation for a fleeting moment of getting a faustian bargain" type

Slimes are actually one of the few times I've seen people try to be creative with a generic monster. Once saw a manga where a guy uses them to clean sewers.
I saw a LN where they used slimes as toilets. It didn't go far.

The creature I find the most boring in fiction is the sphinx. Best depiction I found was as a backyard pet that flexes on its weeb knowledge

On the other hand, the best mythical creature is of course the frog

What is the most boring creature in myth for you? It is a staple of fantasy culture, but rarely is anything changed about it and it has just gotten boring?
...For me, it is western dragons.
I am open to stories with dragons in general. But the greed, large fire-breathers (or whatever breath choice is used) with that particular shape are overdone.
Though goblins are a veeery close second.

What is the most mysterious creature that you have created? One that not much is known about it (at least to the characters in-world. Though it could be well-known to the characters, and not to the readers), and intrigue is built around it? Do you have any like that in your story?
Mine is Señor Screaming Fingers.

Ogre and cyclops, literally just giant rip offs at this point with only few differences.

Welp. Basically everything.

But in fact not bored, because i read chinese novels. And unlike west or jp authors, that mostly do "isekai grinding or ORETUEEEE", despite a past of writing lot of crap works (and still do), lot of good chinese authors write FANTASY WORKS bc they know their own xianxia is over saturated OR low potential for ideas.

Despite still same stereotypes, they write decent original ideas with their "detailed writing style".

@TheMonotonePuppet @Paul_Tromba @TrashyHuman
For example, one of my top favorites is chinese MC being a doctor in fantasy word.

在異界開醫院沒有那麼難吧

It's not that difficult to open a hospital in another world, right? https://uukanshu.cc/book/17059/

Beside the fact author got fair dose of research in term of medical (even looking at numbers in medical papers or data),
it was funny when he wrote the idea that dwarves got usual strength bodies but long term life in cave and smithing cause pneumonia and more stuff.
When MC cotton test the saliva, the quantity of bacterias in it is so much that a normal human would die if he had 1/10 of it. (funny when thinking a phlegm could potentially kill someone)

So later MC do lungs washing for them. Water being fully dark when done.

Also MC use a (gifted by elder + slightly sentient) gold (=realm lvl) skeleton to control as assistant.
Skeletons are easy to clean by just putting all the bones inside a pot + disinfecting liquid. And they can even put themselves inside the pot by themselves lol.
Controlled by mind. Don't tremble. AND got strength needed to pierce the skin of strong lifeforms with scalpels.

Heroine is a female dragon (young). That morph into a female elf for 2-feet form. Tsundere but well done. In fact near immediately is DEREDERE. The kind that is as innocent as a loli or a childhood friend type, that want to experience lot of things in the world and know the knowledge of MC.
Also as a dragon is freaking mega op = tasty to read plot armor bodyguard for MC.

(warning) Early chaps, there is a trash arrogant noble. But skipped soon. Stepping stones for MC for rushing powering.

PS : The perfect novels could be done if korean+chinese+jp styles are mixed well. The famous completed novel [The luckiest man] is biggest example.
PSPS : R18 chinese novels often surpass jp erotica novels, bc its detailed and not full of jp moans and heart emotes (ton of them).
PSPSPS : Lot of chinese novels can rival KONOSUBA in term of comedy but sadly, just like chinese authors complain, the "capitalists" focused on faceslap series for manhuas. But recently some very good novels won adaptations.

Actually a hard question, but for it would be...

...Fairies or Fae or any variant name you might have for them. Generally just not that interesting imo.

...Demons that are only written as non-humans, but are basically humans.

...Gnomes or Halflings. Can't explain why. Maybe I just dislike short people (this is not to be taken seriously)
