Silence. At least if enough people talk shit about my story it'll gain some attention. Controversy is good for attention so if you get some reviews cursing you out for Steve Rogers sodomizing Hitler a couple people might just click out of morbid curiosity.

Meanwhile silence just gets ya a whole load of nothing.

Silence is normal. I never mind that kind of thing. Trolls? Personally doesn't care about them, targetted to me or not. After all, it's the internet. If someone's really scared of them, please do create a safe space. And yes, I think trolls are somewhat worse because it's annoying and may put of some readers just because of it. But trolls don't represent all destructive remarks. Any critiques you don't see as 'constructive' may come as destructive. I want those kind of things. Even if it's pure negative review, it's better than silence. I share my writings so that I can be better. Any negative review is good for me to find what's wrong with mine, and what's what I will not compromise

Does it count that someone reviewed my work to 1 star, stating that I basically haven't been following my plot, when its only been an introductory story and haven't even touched upon that I was planning on writing a large mystery novel, unraveling between my MC, the heroines and the apocalypse?

Not only that, I think the guy cursed me so bad that he literally cause a blackout and signal lag that I basically been cut off from the internet for 2-3 days?

If so, you are given why I haven't been posting updates since I am basically Christian and someone cause a miracle only God created which I never want to touch my novel again unless the guy uncursed me....

At least cunt actually comment what their dislike so that the author may improve in his journey as a writer.

But the silent reader—the silence hurts.

Or just have a single chapter with a slightly controversial plot point in it, and rake in those mid-series comments. Even though the story has now moved on 20+ chapters from then.

Are recurring commentators really that rare? I have three who comment on every chapter, and around five more that comment every other chapter or so.
I'm talking about people who comment on every chapter while binging. The ones who comment every chapter as you post them are an entirely different sort from the ones who comment on every chapter while in the middle of binging the series.

I'll take sigma grindset chad readers over cunts.

I write to dump my shit on people and leave without further elaboration.

I treasure the readers who leave kind comments but I can't force them to come. When I get one, I feel like a disney princess with wild birds coming over to peck the food in my hand.

Personally I would say that toxic people are more frustrating. While silence is a problem, it doesn't matter to me at least. I view myself as more of a reader than a writer and writing these stories are a way for me to put the stories I want to read on a "piece of paper". That way, even if I fail to get readers, in theory, the story is something I would read and enjoy myself later. Toxic people are much harder as they seem to take a blow at your ego, and not take into consideration what's happening on your end. Honestly, I wish people could review as a neutral third party instead of adding all the nasty comments. That way it gives you a chance to grow and make your story better rather than demotivating people.

This. It also helps since you know what triggers people and then can decide whether or not to double down on it.

Also, if enough people flame you, and assuming you've got a decent work, there's going to be at least one person motivated enough to say nice things in response to that.

Silence on the other hand leaves you with nothing.

You can work with hate, you can't work with nothing.

I kind of love my silent readers. There’s a little hardcore on my book who’re always up to date and never say a single word. I’m fascinated by the mystery of these people. Are they enjoying? Are they on board with the tone of the story? Invested in what happens? Hatereading? Just vibing? I’ll never know and that’s beautiful.

Don’t seem to get trolls.

I get a lot of ‘professional nitpickers’ though - people whose entire comment history is posting “GOTCHA!” type posts on people’s stories when they think they’ve noticed a plot hole or error.

That bunch are weird. I’ve no objection to their hobby (might feel different when they eventually catch me with a legit plot hole!) but it kind of frustrates me that they don’t see that what they’re doing is a bit of an odd way to read.

As long as you don't take yourself too seriously and the "trolls" don't treat you like CWC I think they are way better than just radio silence.
If I didn't want other folks looking at my work I would just keep it to myself.
yeah, That's my line of thinking before i know SH

You are an aspiring but still new writer and decided to post your story in the sites, be it SH, Wattpad, RRL or any other.

Then there it is, you are confronted by two of the many problems faced by writers; the lack of audience and trolls.

The quiet crowd, where even the crickets would stop chirping. Your reader count may or may not be ticking up; if it goes up, good. If not, then you might need help with shameless advertisement. But then you notice, even with more than 20 readers on a chapter, no one commented. No one said anything. It feels like you are getting hogtied and sensory deprived by the reader base and it is frustrating with you shaking your hips- releasing chapters periodically and still nothing.

Then it came, the ones with the penis piercing. Maybe your fanfic of how Steve Rogers sodomized Hitler had pissed off the neo nazi, maybe the stars align oddly and it is hate at first glance, maybe it's Maybelline. Either way, you got a response, from someone who curses at your existence, he ridicules on how you type, on your plot, on the characters and the way you breathe. It seems like the only thing the negative Nathan have not tried is to report you to the CCP and get you deport into the corrective facility in Xinjiang.

As a person at best, what, in YOUR honest opinion, is the worst?
I genuinely don't give a fuck, I am doing this for fun, he can suck my cock

Silence definitely is worse. With zero feedback from others I'd then be forced to rely on self-critique, which can be tricky if I can't compare my thoughts with readers.

If someone is being an asshole for the sake of being an asshole, that's really easy to ignore. At least the asshole speaks though ?, they could have perfectly valid criticisms and/or pick up on flaws that neither me or an overly positive bubble would've otherwise noticed.
