You are an aspiring but still new writer and decided to post your story in the sites, be it SH, Wattpad, RRL or any other.

Then there it is, you are confronted by two of the many problems faced by writers; the lack of audience and trolls.

The quiet crowd, where even the crickets would stop chirping. Your reader count may or may not be ticking up; if it goes up, good. If not, then you might need help with shameless advertisement. But then you notice, even with more than 20 readers on a chapter, no one commented. No one said anything. It feels like you are getting hogtied and sensory deprived by the reader base and it is frustrating with you shaking your hips- releasing chapters periodically and still nothing.

Then it came, the ones with the penis piercing. Maybe your fanfic of how Steve Rogers sodomized Hitler had pissed off the neo nazi, maybe the stars align oddly and it is hate at first glance, maybe it's Maybelline. Either way, you got a response, from someone who curses at your existence, he ridicules on how you type, on your plot, on the characters and the way you breathe. It seems like the only thing the negative Nathan have not tried is to report you to the CCP and get you deport into the corrective facility in Xinjiang.

As a person at best, what, in YOUR honest opinion, is the worst?

The later, easily could influence the way of thinking of writers, especially new writer.

This happened to me when I started writing, because in my fanfic im using stupid and immature mc, the readers then begin to riddicule me and forced me to do change plot a bit, and I ended didn't know what I should do next on my story.

I quickly recovered from it though and learn my lesson that I should do whatever I want and you can't make all people agree with you.

Especially when you are just hobbyist.

As for the former, I think it just happen to people who care too much about statistic, subjectively. I honestly only get 1 comment per chapter release from my fanfic nowaday compared to easily more than 5 in the past... but eh, I still keep writing on it.

If you dont care and let yourself do whatever you want, the former would be never a problem to begin with.

Why do I care about either one? This is a side-hustle. I drive trucks for a living and write novels for fun.

Ah yes, these entitled 'I just want to enjoy' writers who gain nothing and waste their electricity and oxygen typing garbage fantasy novels. Yeah, why do I even give a fuck about people who lives to fulfill their delusions.

It's sad that what you have said is a wicked reality here...
Well, that first paragraph, lack of audience, trolls, and audience support had ever made me stopped writting.

In second stage, I convinced my self to not be an attention seeker anymore nor i care much about the reader. And i do face that second problem you write, haah... it sure made my mood worse. Alas, I keep writting but not as crazy as before.
.
As for the third problem, Thanks that i haven't experienced that yet.
.
Btw, thanks for the enlightenment.
you have told me one of easy way to get those sillent reader response easily, That was to make a story about a crazy and headache moral degeneration.

As long as you don't take yourself too seriously and the "trolls" don't treat you like CWC I think they are way better than just radio silence.
If I didn't want other folks looking at my work I would just keep it to myself.

Silence is worse because it won’t sell, anger does, angry people will consume your stuff, when it comes to media and such the worst reaction you can get is silence, and hey atleast the angry people will be promoting you in a way because they are going to bitch about it.
Hey that’s-

20 chapter views and complaining about no comments?

It's been my experience that less than 1% of readers comment, so you need to be making upwards of 100 reads per chapter before it's in any way strange that your chapters are comment free.

Most comments come in either the 1st 5 chapters, or the single most recent chapter. Those who comment on the chapters between those points are less than 0.1%, so you need to be raking in thousands of views before you stand much of a chance at getting mid-series comments.

(That, or you pull a lucky straw and get one of those people who comment on every chapter.)

You know, sometimes I feel like the bad guy here, but for someone who isn't biased. I just couldn't care stating the asshole facts.
Yeah, I mean, I imagined you come into this thread holding a flammenwerfer while screaming "DIE SCUM!" like a zealous bloodmarine and that got me into defence mode aka "stfu and see if the rage induced guy will leave me alone"

I understand where you stand. I just have no idea on how to approach the topic while turning it into a yelling match.

Since I mainly remember you from the VN thread, I had taken you as the "be proud relative to your own skills" kind of person.

Guess I was wrong. Well, if nothing else, another person to bully without remorse if I have something to vent

Stop the cap. I don't yell, I trip balls. Or do you assume I'll flag the whole thread? Now I feel like a poison.

Tbh, nobody cares about your impression. If you got something to cry about your misunderstanding, then make me impressed. That's what I am here for.

Or just have a single chapter with a slightly controversial plot point in it, and rake in those mid-series comments. Even though the story has now moved on 20+ chapters from then.

Are recurring commentators really that rare? I have three who comment on every chapter, and around five more that comment every other chapter or so.

I prefer to pick my battles. There are days where I enjoy a quiet, discreet +1 to my Favourite count and there's other times where I want to engage in a apeshit slap fight with some guy with the letters G N I E R worn out on his keyboard.

If I have to be honest, I'll take the silent crowd. I do sketches on the side and I post them on the most uptight discord servers where they'll flame you and bring up Jesus everytime they see a cat ear or an animal snout. If you don't know what my sketches look like, its basically an affront to God, both literally and metaphorically. If I ever want a blowjob on my ego by some cunts, I'll just engage with them and have my evening entertained as they send me mountains of shock gore in my DMs through muted notifications.

It's depends on person.
For me silence is way worse. Personally I am veteran of trowing shit on forums, both interrnational and Russian as well as being moderator in the large game community (and this is almost as bad as being a tech support). So I don't take stuff too personally and analyse what is said for an actual usefull titbits. People who don't make any sense I simple ignore, for ones who just stressed I actually converse, for people who don't like where story is going I almost always can find either words to reassure or recommend several other stories to read instead, ones who seek the fight on regular basis I troll and humilate before other readers but only when I can do it intelligently, my only weakness are "Gordon Ramcy's" type of entitled, mostly other authors (or rather couple specific authors) who tend to have an ability to point at something that I or we with co-author overlooked but tend to be an ass about this. They actually managed to put me into short term anger or depression couple of times.

But silence is worse.
Is like all your efforts are wasted and no one reads you even if stats suggest otherwise. This is easily can and did stopped me from writing the story permanently. And why I stopped doing "pilot" chapters altogether. Because I actually don't like to write, I simple a gloryhound who likes to make ideas, develop them and show results to other people to make myself feel better. It's just I have zero talent in drawing or music so the writing is just something I stopped at. And yet there is way more of stuff I created incorporated into video games (I do mechanics designs and quest designs on the side) or other people stories than stories I did wrote myself. Just because while I tend to write without "plan" I still see process of writing an actual story as a hard work, which REQUIRES to check many materials to make the world believable and making sure that most readers will think in the proper direction and don't misubderstand details, all the while keeping track of what you already wrote to make sure there is no contradictions, no matter how minor. I can't accept less or my pride will be wounpded. And it is just tiring.
