Side character deserve better

In most stories, when a good side character dies, it’s almost always unnecessary. These guys die every day, and no one cares. But the moment someone close to the main character dies, suddenly, the entire world shakes.


Man, I kinda feel bad for those side characters—they deserved better.

Man, I kinda feel bad for those side characters—they deserved better.

I'll be killing one of the primary party here in the next couple chapters. she doesn't deserve it, but it is required to propel the story forward. The thing is, she'll be dead but not gone.

I plan to eventually do something different and kill off an MC myself...

I've heard of a few novels that do this, but I can't remember their titles off the top of my head. MC dies, the story jumps to MC2. They die, it jumps to MC3, and so on.

Uh, but do you cry or feel shocked when you hear about someone you don't really know dies? I've only cried when my grandparents died.

Granted in most stories, the mc knows about the side character and might’ve hung out a few times or even received advice from them. In that case I guess out of universe the writing is off and in universe the mc is just internalizing it? Guess not every character can get the, it's beginning to rain, treatment.

Would that make it fall into that trope of killing the minions but sparing the villain? Damn, the side character's the minion...

Hmmm... I prefer to start with a dead side character. Then, bring them back by quoting them throughout the story for the benefit of the MC. I'll bring back their memories and what they did and said to affect MC. It's a nice way to keep them alive by their memories.
