Sick and tired of adventurer's guild and dungeon diving.

No, I'm really sick. My asthma's been triggered by the suddenly cold weather.

But yeah, I'm also sick and tired of the typical isekai trope of having adventurers' guild, dungeon diving, and the level systems. Can we have some non-game-y isekai stuff? No? Okay. Just saying.

I can recommend some of the better anime ones, then:
- Vision of Escaflowne
- Record of the Twelve Kingdoms
- The Boy and the Beast

(Same category, but not as great imho: magic knight rayearth, el hazard, fushigi yuugi, "now and then, here and there", dog days. And if you stretch the definition, Utawarerumono)

Before people started calling Isekai, they were just known as Portal Fantasy, like Alice in Wonderland, Oz, The Neverending Story, Chronicles of Narnia...

I haven’t seen Escaflowne in years, last I remember, it was a really good one. Though, that was like in my teen years.

So, don’t hold me to any standards. ?

Escaflowne has aged like fine wine. It's still excellent, if you can endure the pointy noses.

Excellent music, a few of the best villains of all time. Falcon and Dilandau...!

I can respect that. I’m kind of sick of them too… But at the same time it’s a guilty pleasure genre. XD So no matter how sick of the premise I get, I keep reading them (and writing them sometimes too)… so I’m part of the problem lol
I once did a gag on the Adventurer’s Guild thing. It was a short, and the whole chosen one thing. Where the main refuses to be a part of it, since chosen ones die. ?

Yeah, I remember it was really good.

I sick of the ones that seem like their all taken out of the same mould. The ones with a decent storyline are nice but most are just money grabbers taking advantage of a popular genre. I really like sword art online.

A shame they condensed the 2/3 later half from 26 to 13 episodes. So after the middle point, it all feels a bit rushed.

Still amazing despite that.

The original one was good but the rest seemed like a stretch

Would still recommend Twelve Kingdoms over anything else, though.

Such a breath of fresh air to have a dark and realistic isekai where things really go poorly for the MC.

Basically have to imagine Goblin Slayer's first episode.. (well, no goblins or rape, but the helplessness and such works well) but then stretch the same kind of mysery for maybe 13 episodes.

Youko *does not* have an easy or pleasant time in there.

Although for people who hate Erin from TWI, they may also dislike Youko for being a little bit too stuck in her ways.

Adventurer Guild makes no bloody sense.

I get why it needs to exist in games and in some novels, but really it does not make any sense.

The thing becomes even more hilarious when said guild is actually detached from powers such as nobles. Who in their right mind would allow sellswords to willy nilly exist in their turfs?

I think it is just one of those things that people do not understand what made it good. Ya know, they see something popular and just try to copy rather than understand.

If you ever played Atelier Iris 3. This has the theme of an Adventurer’s Guild, but they are Raiders. The guild itself serves as a point that chains the plot.

As it starts off with the characters wanting to be well known. However, as it goes along, and they seek after gems to supposedly get a wish.

You see Iris get cursed, and how the game takes a dark turn. As it goes along, you see and experience Edge’s desperation to save Iris.

And as time ticks away, the desperation grows. You see as he overcomes challenge after challenge, even the top Raider who he lost to initially.

Eventually, you see as the guild tries to help him save Iris. All the while, they were gathering those gems or whatever.

With it getting into his second battle with the top raider and surpassing them. It goes far, when he learns that collecting those gems were meant to seal Oroborous.

So, the last battle in the game. He would try to surpass Oroborous but fail, you see as he constantly gets beaten down, no matter he still kept trying to reason with them. Ultimately, it ends with Iris choosing to use the wish to seal away Oroborous.

The ending is determined if you did a side quest line where she comes back in the end.

Point is, the premise of an Adventurer’s Guild can be used great. As in this case, it was a binding link that connected everyone the characters affected throughout the game.

Watched these back in my college years. Magic Knight Rayearth was even dubbed in Tagalog. Narnia is one of my favorite books.

And yeah, I mean the contemporary isekai, not the classics.

Give me a few months...maybe a year or two...and then you can read Siren Called. It's going to be a pirate-themed isekai without any litrpg mechanics.
Imma bookmark it once out.

Read too much of those that it's really stale to me. Been thinking of doing a counter-adventurer's guild isekai, but thought that there's a lot in the web novel space that it will be hard to spot.
The only one I don't like is the leveling system. Dungeons and adventurers guilds are cool.
Tis cool before, but too much and it went stale to me. Like man, the only difference is the title, and a few tweaks, but it's all same photocopied mechanics.

@NotaNuffian asthma's being made worse by the weather at where I am right now. Tagaytay city's a cool place, Summer tourist spot south of Manila, but heck, this seminar's taking place here in the middle of January, when I'm literally walking side by side in the clouds.

Too cold that even my sweater and fats aren't working >.<

Alright, you can start it by the characters walking in to become Adventurer’s just for truck-kun to be waiting behind the desk. ?

Am focusing on my Alt History Fic though, Paulina Rex. Then after that, my other stories put on hiatus, before I can start a new work.

Fair enough, can always write down the idea for later use. ?

and as soon as a different trope reaches even half the popularity, it, too, will be massively overdone and beaten to a literal pulpy paste, just like adventurer's guilds have been. Heres the thing though: sadly, that's what people want. So that's what sells. So that's what writers do. until the majority of readers agree on a better trope, adventurer's guilds will be the best.

Personally, I try to minimize it. It's more a tool than an actual organization. I use it more as like "I won't join, but I'm happy to browse the list and help out if I need cash."

But It makes sense that a fantasy world with rampent monsters would have a group of people to handle them - regardless of what they're called or the specifics of how it operates, it's the same basic idea: "We have problem. We pay you to fix the problem." It's little different from IRL fiverr or angie's list, or other such handyman websites. just, instead of leaky pipes, it's a leak in the population as a dragon devours your people.
