Should I rather not?

Due to my work at the moment, I'm only able to upload chapters occasionally. Well, actually, it's better to say I "would" be since I haven't even started yet.

As already mentioned, I plan to start my first novel this week. Unfortunately, a big project has come up at work, and I have to invest a lot of time in it.

Should I wait until I'm free again, or should I start now and post it whenever I have a chapter ready?

PS: I don't hope to earn any money with it, and I see it as a pure hobby :)

Maybe you should write when you have time and complete the book first before posting.

Happy writing! =)

I've already considered it, but I'm afraid of writing myself into a corner. Writing myself into a corner is probably the wrong word... I mean that I won't have the freedom to customize much anymore. I'd like to see how it goes down first if you know what I mean... A rough draft is great, but I don't want to be too constrained.

I always always recommend keeping a schedule. If you can't post, then don't. That said, the best thing you can do is build up a small stockpile so you can smooth out for the times when you can't. If it's 1 chapter a week, best to publish 1 chapter a week.

Readers get upset when you miss a chapter, but get hyped when you give them extra.

If you publish 1 chapter a week (guaranteed), but then give them two extra chapters, they'll be real happy.

If you publish 3 chapters a week, but then miss a chapter, everyone gets upset.

I don't get it. Isn't that exactly what posting on the fly does? You can change anything and everything until you post it.

Sounds like you have no confidence and want the excuse of readers hating it to kill it early.

Write a brief outline, or even just have a mental outline. Where do you want the story to go, what are your major arcs. If you have that, you shouldn't write yourself into a corner, and you won't be constrained.

If you want to change an arc, you can, but you'll know that you might need to shift other things in the outline to make it work. That's fine too. I've done it many times. I've decided to add a new arc or remove an arc, and then I had to adjust other things so that everything fits together still.

Ultimately, a web novel is just that, a web novel. It's not final. Final is when you publish the book, and individuals have printed copies on their shelves. Anything less than that, and you can change it without much consequence, so don't stress about it.

Post every week or finish it first.

PEW:
Pro, You get feedback and with feedback and comments comes new insight.
Con, You feel wierd when you fall behind. This can lead to negative feelings and that leads to writer's block,

FIF:
Pro, You finished it. Just post it every three days and enjoy the glow of admiration.
Con, Nobody kicking you in the ass to get it done.

You should always prioritize real life over your hobbies, even if said hobbies happen to have an audience, like this one does. That being said, SH makes it tough to take breaks in uploading if you give even an iota of shit about popularity. The millisecond you stop your regular updates you are forgotten, which is kind of a problem but there really isn't a good solution imo

Only insofar as you treat it as a non-income hobby. If you are working towards some goal (making money or some self improvement) then depending on what you mean by real life, this can be false.

Wait until you procreate, and then you'll never have time to upload your chapters ever again!
