I've read a crap ton of novels, manga and whatever revolving around a dating sim, and I've just realized I never actually played one. In fact, I just learned they actually EXIST, not some plot device some author one day decided to pull out of his poop hole.

I want to try one for firsthand experience, but I'm afraid I'll cross a line that was never meant to be crossed.

Should I do it?

I'd say that you can try, but be careful to get a good one for your first time, for it will plague you for the rest of your life if you choose wrongly.

On more serious note, it's just like with hentai. Even in all the crap that's there, you can actually find good stuff that can additionally serve for good reference when writing. My opinion might be a bit skewed, but that's because I hate how many of these games show girls as something to be obtained, conquered, whatever.

I used to play a lot of them way back before I was into webnovels.

From my experience, I don't really play them for dating aspect, but more like novels to enjoy each route. I didn't play much of them though.

For a good one (imo), try Clannad and Ever 17: out of infinity. For those I heard, people do recommend Katawa Shoujo and Majikoi. There's a lot of good titles out there but it can take out a lot of your time.

I remember having to play an old dating sim game which was a flash game and I had to grind my stats up just to win. I actually didn't do it just to get a girl, I only did it to finish a game. It was like the start of my game grind to play a game and finish it, whether it through normal means or cheats as long as I get the ending.

In fact, I had an idea for a novel because of that.

Kid me made a novel about some weak loser who gets bullied and got a chance upon a magical item which develops his body into the idea of which he wants to focus on. Like if he focus on strength, his physical body develops to become muscular and all acrobatic. Intelligence would be just becoming smarter and charm would make him more handsome and develop into a peak male body but without the strength benefits.

Then, he would chase around girls, winning their affection to the point where they confess and they would get immediately get rejected because I love what kid me wrote on the notebook.

'Its not about the affection, its all about the grind.'

I would definetly write this just because it kid me was so creative if not for the fact that he began writing about zombies, robots and bad guys being muscular horses that breathes fire. Too much info dump for me to rework on.

You should just to get an understanding of it but I recommend that you try the Colonel Sanders dating sim as it is more for comedy purposes.

Just think of it as training, simulation 101.

Firsthand experience is the best, but since we are still in a pandemic, I recommend dating carefully or not at all. Dating sims can be a nice substitution when you need to be extra careful.

There are a few really good dating sims, but most of those things people label "Dating Sims" are actually Visual Novels, which is something like crippled a crossbreed bewtween Anime and Manga. Mostly reading, a few choices here and there and that's it.

Some do have pretty great stories in them, tho. Stuff like FSN and Clannad started as Visual Novel, for example. ?
(A friend forced me into playing one and now I'm pretty addicted to them, so be aware.)
