This scenario happened in a world similar to western 1800s Earth.

A race of human who is responsible for a lot of war and genocide was sentenced to death with a super bomb. The only survivor was a young boy. Considering the youngster having no relation to the atrocity of his race, he would be treated humanly and allowed to lead a normal life.

The kid, however, never got past his trauma and developed a severe case of depression. He was depressed that he was the last of his kind, that his kind was hated, that his parents were dead and his siblings pulverised by the bomb. His symptoms include lack of appetite and autonomy. He spent his time in his room and obeyed what other told him to do but wouldn't do anything else beside staying motionless in a corner or on his bed.

He had suicidal tendency and tried to starve once. After that, food was forced down his throat and he was under surveillances. If asked what he wanted to do, he would reply that he wanted to go meet his family (suicide).

Since the kid was 15 years old, the people in charge decided a breeding program would help him regaining his motivation. They wanted to gift him a family and told him to choose volunteers among the girls. He declined so they chose for him and drugged him. They told him about the growing babies belong to 3 surrogated female volunteers. That he could meet them once they would be born. The mothers of course would not have any contact with them afterward.

His mental wellbeing took a nosedive. He sobbed about not having control of his body and his life or death.

Professionals argued over the decisions in the past few years. One side pointed out that their work kept the suicidal kid alive while the other retorted that it was life worse than death and no one should have the power to force life or death over any human.

I would agree to keep him alive but, that's too cruel.

If I were to be a part of his caretaker, I would rather give him some stuff to make as a hobby. I lend him a book and a pen, who knows he loves writing? I tuck in a jigsaw box, who knows he enjoys puzzles? I lay a novel in his room, who knows he's a bookworm? I give him two pieces of bread alongside some ingredients, who knows he likes to make food?

Start with smaller things and make him smile, he'll eventually open his heart to any suggestions.

They gave him 3 babies to take care of with no help from their mothers!? That's extreme torture. Not only for him, but those poor babies are being neglected.

On further reflection, give him an opportunity to volunteer with animals, children, or babies, but don't just saddle him with full-time responsibility right off the bat. Start small and let him decide when he's ready for more responsibility.
