Scam or prank???

I just had a phone call from a lady

She apparently got the wrong number.

But instead of giving up, she kept insisting she had the right number, asking me if this number belonged to my girlfriend, or mother of something.

And then she said I seem like such a nice guy, she would call me again


So, I sensed that this is a scam.

But I still wanted to play along.
So I just asked where is she from, and I was expecting her to say something exotic like France or Russia

But instead she said the name of my village.

Which is such a oddly specific thing to say, it makes me think this is a prank by one of my cousins.

See this is where my expertise in reading stuff on NU comes in. Scam, prank, lonely person, or weirdo are things that the average person might think but clearly don’t make sense for obvious reasons.

Spoiler: The truth - Definitely not a bad haha funny written at 6 in the morning on a phone by a very sleep deprived person.

Really the only conclusion is that this lady met a Taoist priest who used her 8 numbers and appearance to calculate her fortune. But then, he saw that calling you would be fortunate so he took the number and didn’t tell the lady. And then the lady who is currently super unlucky cause she didn’t call you yet was stumbling along when some teenage girl offered to calculate her future for free. Of course she didn’t believe the girl could do so, but she was a nice lady and was willing to humor the teenager. Naturally this teenager was actually the reincarnation of the sect leader of the 8 trigrams sect so her calculation ability and understanding of taoist principals was unbeatable. She calculated that her fate was to have good fortune after calling the number but also noticed that fate had gone elsewhere. She bid the lady farewell and tracked down the old Taoist. She stole his lunch money while also banishing his soul to the shadow realm so he couldn’t rob people of their fortune again.

Now that’s just the obvious part. Here’s where only genius’s like myself can understand it.

See now if the teenager Taoist master just gave the number it would be weird because she’s hiding her abilities despite showing them on a whim. So she told her underlings friends who also have all have a crush on her, to use their connections and wealth to subliminally encourage her to sit down and butt dial you. The asking about stuff is clearly just an unintended side effect. And because she did manage to call, she’ll be blessed with unimaginable luck in stone gambling which will allow her to curry favor with the aliens who need that ability to scout out suitable planets for inhabitation and then later getting reincarnated into a game and getting perused by a ML who’s definitely not a creep yandere who can’t take no for an answer. Later she’ll remember the teenager and give her some jade or something. Probably.

Honestly, it’s the only logical conclusion.

Sounds scammy
I got some saucy texts from a stranger a few weeks ago, and she (or "she") was claiming that we knew each-other. The scammer was fishing for lonely people to send them money (or nudes, that they could then use for blackmail)

Your situation is different but it's still suspicious. Asking about your girlfriend might've been a way to see if you were single. She could have pinpointed your town based on your area code. Etc.

Maybe I'm overthinking it. But regardless, insisting that she had the right number and then claiming that she'll call you again is weird.

That's the thing, I was born and raised in city. All of my documents or other places from where a scammer may had stolen my info from should reflect my city.

This village is where my parents were born, and i only go there occasionly for family dinners.

But yes

insisting that she had the right number and then claiming that she'll call you again is weird.

This is very scummy, and most likely "she" will try to seduce me and then say her sister has cancer so she needs money

Or just give me his contact I will look deep into her case
But I will say : Prank that could evolve into a scam

Had a similar case happen, but our roles were reversed. I had some guy call me and ask if the hot dogs were ready, my family was having a barbecue so I naturally l assumed he was one of my cousins who was still at home (my chubby cousin by the sound of his voice).

We had a little back and forth with him quickly realizing he got the wrong number. I thought he was pulling a prank on me as I adamantly insisted I knew it was 'him', things got a little heated as I called him by 'his' full name out loud.

He hung up after that.

The amount of information being sold online is massive so them knowing your hometown isn’t weird at all.

If they do contact you again, I’d just make a burner email and get them to send an email to it. Don’t click on any attachments or reply to it, but just do a header trace on it and you can figure out whether they’re really from where they say they’re from.
