If you are planning to continue/restart a story that you haven't uploaded in a long time(3 years for me) is it better to make a new series and make a remake? Or is it better to continue the old story?

I'm just a reader really but I'd say leave the old version up and update it at least to let anyone still fallowing it know that you want to go back and rewrite it
but I also often have a hard time myself getting into a rewrite as i either find myself constantly comparing it with the original and or being impatient to get back to the point it was previously at

I recently rewrote redneck isekai. I put the previous chapters together in a single draft document, put a link up, and started fresh with prior chapters hidden.

Continue the old story but read through and edit some of the old chapters based off what you've learned since. This will make the old story more appealing to new readers without having to scrap it and possibly forgo continuing it till later.

It depends on what works best for you. Finishing what you started is a great life skill, but sometimes starting from scratch is better.

It's important for you to do what you want to do, not necessarily what's best for others.

After all, you have to still love writing for your project to be good, and you may lose this love if you force yourself to do what's best without consideration for your own feelings.

I'd say it depends on how much you wrote, and how little you remember. If you have like ~40k words then you could do some better good with a few revisions; Any more than that, then a story is probably already there you just need to reread and see where you can pick off.

Ideally, you should finish what you started. But if it's hard getting back into it (especially after such a long absence), then by all means, start anew and rewrite it. It might give you a opportunity to explore the same story in a different way that'll help you continue it past where you left of eventually.

I continued a fanfic after I left it to stew for two years. I am not convinced that my old readers saw it, but that is fine. Still, I like the new ending way better than the old one. The important thing is to read what you already have beforehand. Even if you have taken notes, you can't remember every detail, and the notes won't be as descriptive as the story itself. Just don't rewrite, if you can't rewrite. You will change too much, and then it will be a different story, with a different soul.

I honestly suffer from the same issue. It's been so long? What do I do? That and many other thoughts swirling around my head. Not very constructive for trying to write. Key word: try.

This may be too personal to answer properly but for me,I think....I would want to finish it. I would want to keep making MORE of the story. As much as possible. As much as I can go.

I def. have gone back to edit earlier chapters. It's more for flow cohesiveness and grammar mistakes. As a whole, it could use a hell lot more editing. But I would want to focus more on writing it, to keep going. Maybe when it's done, or at least, further along, can that remake or re-edit come? First is writing it out. You can edit when it's all said and done.

So I would say, team Continue.
