Referrer empty question

when i look up statistics i sometimes see referrer's listed as (empty). not sure what that means. does anybody have a guess?

It means that someone got redirected to that link through a new tab on the browser. It is empty because the link of the new tab is empty, therefore comes out as (empty).

or it came from a direct link. example: clicking on link from browser history
