First off, thanks for reading my polls! I really like to gather information and study out what will make a good story better. And what readers hope to find and see in chapters. So sometimes I'll do stuff like this with getting to know what you think. Feel free to comment below.

Which fantasy races you like to see in a story, and what rank you like them?

You can pick more than once. ***The idea is the more people jump on the poll, and with time,... it'll start to naturally show which races have which popularity in rank order.***

Disclaimer; some of my stories have some of these. Some of my books not here also. But some of this is for future book research and story research for stories here.

Thank you very much for replying. Feel free to send me private comments if you want to also.

I've never chosen to read a story based on the characters race, nor have I quit because of it.

The writing and story is what I care about, regardless of these elements. Sometimes some races can be more interesting, having unique cultures... but I see that less often than I do just reskinned humans.

Well said! And nice to hear from you again. Thank you. Its true its the writing that makes the story.

I've also thought that it might be hard to write from some perspectives. Like for example, the idea of writing a story with underwater races seems exciting until I realized... I have no idea where or how I would be able to fill the mindset of how such a world worked. It would be much harder to write because we're naturally different from that. Some mindsets of how something lives are easier to fill, and help to write the story.

Not sure if I get what you mean by ranking them. Definetely "Water dwelling species; (Merfolk, and sea elves) (Would they be together?)" We need more of them. I would like to see more centaurs, some Girtablilu(half people half scropion) would be nice. Anything that is rare.

I second the sentiment that the key to interesting "fantasy" races in stories is not how often some particular morphology appears in other stories, but in how their culture develops given the difference in nature. Like, if goblins are naturally low empathy/high group cohesion, what does that look like from the inside, or if orcs value strength above all else, how does that shape how they see the world (these are basic bitch ideas, but I hope you get the point).

I'm surprised you didn't throw in the Orcs or even a hybrid option for anyone else.

I like werewolves and enjoy stories where they're a thing
Interesting! Werewolves haven't been used very much in stories. I think they are untapped. There are a few stories using them ... but not many.

Oh dear. I didn't think people would want that. But next time I'll include orcs. Are people into orcs now? Or would it be enough to be living in an orc town?

Thanks for saying that. I will try to see what I can think of on this now that I know others are interested in it too. I like the idea of an underwater plot. Just it would take some time to work out how to write it.

I haven't heard of half scorpions before. Could probably be written as a variant type Lamia? Is that what you were thinking of?
There is no dragon option?

You have failed fantasy school.
I will do a dragon poll later. Not today but you got me thinking on it.

Actually I'm working on a dragon story too. But its not up here.

Actually I was worried about giving ideas on dragons lol. That's why I didn't add it. One time I asked a forum poll about an idea I was tinkering with. At the time it was on Royal Road, and someone took the idea and used it before I could.

I feel this so badly. Totally agree.

But also: elves for the win.

Similar to lamia, yes. The race that is mostly in sand dunes. Instead of yet another orc, undead, or even lizardmen subspecies, you got scorpion people. That would be a cool and fresh addition to a fantasy novel. Experiencing some areas other than standard fantasy forest, standard fantasy northern region, and standard mountains.

Abour merfolk. It would be cool to see them inhabitate marshlands, swamps, OR, mangroves. Maybe you can get lamias in swamps or mangroves, or some kind of werefrogs in those areas. That would be super interesting and unique. There are so many standard, generic novels that usually have the same pool of locations, that getting something new there, even if the story is super generic, would be advantageous. Or so I think, can be wrong.
