I’m considering changing the chapter format of the novel and would really appreciate your opinion.
Currently, chapters are around 600 words each, but I’m thinking about condensing them into longer and denser chapters (around 1,500 to 2,500 words per chapter).

Which format do you prefer?

In my experience, short chapters quickly increase the exposure of your fiction. However, they also decrease the artistic value of your narrative (writing complex narratives requires longer chapters).

Finally, I opted for longer chapters (1.5k - 3k words) to maintain artistic value and long-term investment (especially if your fiction is intended to be published as a book). I even rewrote vol. 1, which had short chapters, while simultaneously writing longer chapters in vol. 2.

ill be honest im far more likely to drop a novel with a ton of short chapters then less chapters that are longer bc it feels like the chapters are being split to bolster the numbers

Personally, I prefer around 4k, and seeing anything under 1k average just makes me skip the story entirely. Around 2k is a solid middle ground.

When I'm reading something good, it's logical that I want to read more. So, I like bigger chapters.
Thank you for your honest opinion.

A chapter should be as long - or short - as it needs to be to advance the plot (if there is one) or provide a proper snapshot of a situation if doing Slice of Life stuff. Sometimes you can do that in under 750 words (in the novel Howling Mad, Peter A. David managed to succeed at this with a single sentence: "It seemed the polite thing to do." ) but that is an extreme example!), sometimes it takes 3k or more.

That said, for a webnovel, you really want to try to hit the "sweet spot" of around 2000 words, give or take, as that is what most binge readers can wade through on a break or something to keep their interest up.

The chapters have been updated to a format with more content.

I hope you can give this new version a chance.

While considering that a "short chapter" by my own preferences is ~2500 - ~3500 words on average...
I'd definitely advocate for what you're calling longer chapters from a reading, and writing, perspective.

Personally, I feel a chapter should be as long as it needs to be in order to deliver on the narrative beats that it has to, and set up for the next chapter.

Yes, MFontana, your point of view is valid and appreciated. It is different for each person. In my view, a chapter with around 2,000 words is already long, while 1,000 is medium and anything below 700 is short.

But in the end, it all depends on the reader’s perspective. That is why I ran the poll, to understand everyone’s opinion. Please do not focus too much on the exact numbers I mentioned, but rather on whether you personally prefer short, medium, or long chapters.

Thanks for the feedback, and I hope you give my story a chance.

You're forgetting one fundamental thing... the most members of the forum are authors, not just casual readers. So if you're looking for answers that represent the opinions of casual readers (who dominate fiction readers), your vote will certainly be biased.

My suggestion: instead of voting on the forum... you'd be better off conducting an empirical trial and error experiment. Try releasing short chapters and then releasing long chapters and see what the difference in views is between the short chapters and the long ones. To be fair, you could equate fixed variables like the number of chapters, release time, and release range. That way, the results will at least represent empirical results.

Alternatively, conduct a Focus Group Discussion (FGD), gathering 6-12 casual readers and asking them for their opinions on their preference for short chapters over long ones.

Thank you for your opinion, Eldoria. It really adds value to this discussion.

Yes, the main idea was to hear from other authors, since you bring different perspectives. That is why I included an option in the poll for people to comment if they had a different view from the listed choices.

The goal was to get a general sense, and so far the results show that around 70% prefer to read or write what are considered “long” chapters. Of course, what counts as long, medium, or short varies from person to person.

After that, I also shared my own point of view on what I personally consider long, medium, and short, based on my preferences as both a reader and a writer.

I know that many people in the forum are other authors who are also promoting their own stories, but there are also very engaged readers who bring an important perspective on chapter formats.

In my case, I was already planning to move toward longer chapters, at least by my own standards. The poll mostly served as a confirmation that the majority also leans in that direction. This also matches the fact that I am finishing the third volume, and both the second and third volumes are already structured with longer chapters.

On top of that, in this new arrangement, the chapters that were merged are closely related and make more sense together from a narrative point of view.

In the end, the poll had several purposes. One was to promote my work. Another was to confirm something I already suspected, and also to interact with the community, meet new authors and readers, and exchange ideas.

Once again, thank you for your comment, and I hope your own works continue to reach more and more readers.

Why do you create a Reader Poll in the Author section? I don't want to bitch, but there is a Reader section.
FRWriter, because I am also an author and I wanted to hear from other authors and have them share their experiences. Like Eldoria mentioned earlier: “I even ended up rewriting Volume 1, which had shorter chapters, while at the same time writing longer chapters in Volume 2.”

Understanding what other authors go through in their creative process is important to me as well. Thanks for sharing your opinion, and I hope you voted in the poll.

I feel like the story will tell you how long the chapters need to be. Some may be shorter, to create tension, some longer to involve the reader in a saga. Both styles are valid. I tend to go for over 2000 for my chapter length, but I write dark fantasy. So there are a lot of descriptions and such. Different writing styles will get different results, I would think.

Good to hear and I hope you're not alone. I'm trying to post my first series here (cover approval issues etc.). I don't even think about chapter length. The length is whatever the story demands. Some of the chapters are quite long. But every chapter has a point and gets to the point. Readers seem to like that. The few who read my stuff, anyway. The book is also complete. So I don't care about schedules either. I'm just going to post chapters if people are reading. If the admins ever get around to approving the foolish thing. :)

Same here Rachel, exactly! I write long books. But they finish. And every chapter finishes. Some are a few hundred words long. Some are very long. Most are in the middle. What the story demands.
