that's strangely sweet. was she old?
Young actually. She had just recently become a professor and turned out that she was struggling with whether or not she should even be a professor. She's still a professor as far as I know but she also runs a loose leaf tea shop out of her house that I frequently buy from because of how good her leaves are.

that's cool. people often forget that professors are humans as well. or maybe that's just us. our education system is beyond flawed

Agreed. I don't know where you live but having a sub-par education system seems to be universal.

there's also the fact that here father-like figures (fathers, teachers, professors, bosses, etc.) are treated somewhat differently. they are often expected to be respected and obeyed. I don't think that's generally prominent in the west. the closest I can describe it is as something similar to how Asians address and revere their parents/elders. now you add that to a position of power and a corrupt system and you get delusional egomanicas. I have heard and personally experienced some really bad examples of this, some very recently even, though most ended on a good note for me.

My grandma explaining to a political science professor how his theories are all wrong because "the news said so."

But I think that times are changing a bit. Even though I don't outright respect and obey my elders in a sort of subservient no questions asked sort of way, they still love me lots. Mainly because I'm the only grandchild that normally checks up on them and tries to care for them, despite being the most Americanized.

political science is made up. it's not real. your grandma is correct.
times are definitely changing,, but I don't think that aspect of society changed, not for our generation at least. also, I loved my grandparents. they spoilt me as well since I was their first grandchild.

As much as I look down on political science, my grandma managed to be more wrong. It would be like telling Freud that boys don't want to fuck their mothers because they'd rather fuck their great-grandfather.

And I think that respecting your elders is such a deeply rooted thing in countries with Confucian values, it's even present in other countries. Personally I actually like keeping it,because sure your elders aren't always right, but experience does have value. And the counter culture is horrible sometimes, young people actively antagonizing older people just because "tHey'rE BoOMErs." Don't even bother to consider that the old man might be right for once.

On a side note, my grandparents may love me but they were giving me some funny ass looks when I said I was dating a black girl.

well I have no intentions of actively fighting against my cultrual norms. I don't mind listening or speaking to older people. they have years of experience and you'll most likely come out with something, or you'll gain a new prespective. and respect is a two-way street, you give and receive.
I'm not really sure what my grandpa would've said if he knew I liked a black girl. there was this girl with a flat chest and I remember him saying "are you going to marry her? she has no tits. her chest is like a washboard".
he'd probably have said one of his famous racist jokes.

My cousins got the ethnically pure grandkids covered for me. I can go for any other Asian or even Europeans with little repercussion. Anything else might be a bit too "exotic" for the folks. Besides, my grandpa doesn't tell racist jokes, that would be my job, he's just plain racist.
