Query: Dividing Fiction into volumes/books

Hey all,

I'm sure this has been discussed but how would you personally divide a story into volumes/books on SH?

Like, maybe have a chapter with a 'Book 1 Name' and author note inserted into the fiction? I'm trying to figure out how to use book covers beyond the original post for the fiction.

Or should this be in Discussions and Writing Tips?

There's a few ways of setting up your books on SH. The one I prefer to do is having all my books on the same page. I Number them like this, "Vol.1 Ch.1. Name Of Chapter"

If you're to have a cover for each book then I would have a page with the cover in it before posting the chapters.

The main reason I do this method is to keep all the views together with the series. SH is default ranked by total views. So the more you can aggregate the better visibility on tags.

There's another method you could do, where you can have separate pages for each book and link them together on the home page of each book.

I haven't really explored this option on SH because I feel it makes it tougher for readers and the book to get better visibility. It separates the view totals for the entire series and you want to make it easier for readers to keep hitting the next chapter button then for the to click off the book to look for the next volume and start it up again.

It's one of the pains in the ass that I came across when posting my books on Wattpad. They have a 200 chapter limit and I have my first three volumes on one collection and the other collection just isn't being seen by the same readers. Like I will keep getting a lot of likes on the first collection up to the end and then they don't respond with anything on the next collection.
Anywho... Those are my thoughts. Do what you will with them. Peace

I started to sort it like my last one: [Book 4] [271. The Frozen Throne], but from what I had seen, nobody actually cares, only when it starts and ends. Chapter names also doesn't seem important.

Would you add in a chapter with the cover on it and move it to the front of the fiction?

I would put the cover in its own chapter ahead of that volume.

I don’t write in web novel format, I have 2 and a half completed standard novels. I have wondered about this too. I wanted to upload my second novel in the series as a separate entity, but I know it will sacrifice visibility. The only thing I can think of is to link to the other works on the first and last chapters. I’m still newish to here, so don’t know how all the website features work yet ?

This is something I wish SH had more options for. I know it’s a niche feature that likely makes an unnecessary mess of chapter indexing, but I think it would be nice to be able to have a book split into distinct parts without bloating chapter titles.
