I do remember not being able to immediately change my title after 50 messages. It was a short while after I got to 50 that the option appeared. I'm not sure if this is just because it took time to update or if there's some other requirement, but the gist is that you should be able to change your title around the time you hit 50 messages.

If I remember correctly you have to wait for thirty minutes after you reach 50 messages to get the ability to set a custom title.
