If you could only choose one, which is better: precision or accuracy?

I feel like you want things to be more accurate.

Like when writing a novel, you want it to be more accurate to the actual plot.

Tbh, in my opinion it kinda depends on the plot.

You all can either agree or disagree to my points. The choice is yours.

Suppose you're writing a medical (or any other modern subject's i.e. STEM, finance, etc. You get the picture.) drama plot, then you gotta be precise as to how the medicines, the operations, the health care system work. Or else no ones' gonna take it as seriously you want it to be. Here, you just care about the numbers.

And if you were writing a history/romance (subjects that are quite sensitive regarding culture and traditions) driven plot, it's best to stay accurate as these topics changes from perspective to perspective. Some may interpreted in this way, or the others in a completely opposite that quite contradicts the previous group's opinion. It's best to find the middle ground as not all of us can interpret or reciprocate the same feelings as the others. This depends a lot on experiences than data could ever comprehend.

So in short : -

Technical genres -> Precision is best suited.

Human genres -> Accuracy is the most appropriate.

Accuracy is hitting a target.
Precision is the quality of measurement.

So killing someone, I'd want to be accurate.
For making money, I'd want precision.

I wouldn't disregard either of them is better than the other.

They are like warmth and hotness.

You need the warmth of your loved ones to cool down your mellowed heart.

While, you require hotness to heat up your favourite hot chocolate during the winters.

Both are essential in the writing, as much as in real life.

But if you are forced to choose one.

Precision measures the proportion of correctly predicted positive instances. Accuracy assesses the overall correctness of predictions.

As a heuristic, or rule of thumb, accuracy can tell us immediately whether a model is being trained correctly and how it may perform generally.

Although you want to be more persistent with the plot.

When a character has a goal, he wants to be more accurate about it, and the plan must be precise.

They’re both important, but no matter how precise you may be, you can’t (truly) reach something without being accurate.

In life, if you could only be accurate or precise, I say accuracy is better—if you try to help someone, you want to understand their problem first before helping them. (Both are important, and overall it depends on the situation.)
