Anyone ever got that feeling when you read a work and a main character gaining some super cool power up or new skill that feels cool but actually served no plot purpose?
I'll give two examples from two different works.
First example is in late stage novel (work ending in less than 100 chps) where MC gained the ability of faster casting speed. MC was up againsting a weaker foe who was causing him annoyance because foe can spam spells faster than him. And then MC killed the guy because MC was already an invincible flying brick who can shoot suns out of his palms. Now with faster casting speed, MC can... shoot the suns out faster.
At this point, MC is already the ceiling of the work's power system and the powerup is pointless.
Second example is one-off powerups, as in used once and never again. This time, MC was fighting against too many enemies and decided to use his dragon transformation power the first time (and last time unbeknowst to me), causing the enemies to flee in terror. I called it pointless because it is a one-off and never seen ever again because "much more broken powerups later".
What are some examples you had seen before? Please post them, thanks.
