Plot devices in stories that causes one to frown?

Nah that is not terrible. Lots of start out with people fighting. If the main content is ship battles it makes sense.

Shipcore starts out with an epic battle where an armada is fighting a giant ai entity for example as the prologue. Then the mc is introduced waking up in a failing ship floating around a debris field. The two events fit together well.

I just don't like the whole walking down the street and someone gets captured by nameless people in two sentences with nothing leading up to it.
Like this one, no?

... ok? That is on purpose I hope, to give suspense to the readers?

I think he means he hates opening scenes where you're thrown into a battle for no apparent reason.

Something like how Halo:Combat Evolved started with the human ship suddenly under attack from the Covenant, but you're not sure why and you suddenly have to escape a burning ship? Yea that kind of insta-gank i think.

If I'm wrong, please correct me.
Thanks.
If He means this then I agree.

Extending from your "hating power corrupts" point, I kind of hate the whole BS where bad guys are rewarded while good guys go suck dicks when they tried to attain more power. The logic is always "getting more power is evil, you're evil for wanting more" when the weak and powerless are getting pressed onto the asphalt by bullies.

Also, I hate the whole good mentor has to die in order to motivate MC trope ffs. I had dropped works where the authors are like "whelp, the old fart has teached everything to MC, time for him to die to further the fucking plot". Note that it is always a "him", because if it was a her and she's hot, MC will add her into his bloody harem. There was a time where I read a work had done, not once, not thrice but five fucking times where the old guys are there to die for MC.
5 times? That is even worse than the overused my-parents-are-dead-so-I'm-all-alone backstory.

@Hans.Trondheim Well, at least they identified that guy as an anime protagonist. Imagine if the video just skipped to the put the money in the bag.

The author was braindead and so was I.

So hopefully optimistic that the fucker would have a new trick that I soldiered on by skipping chapters.

I don't really know if I should 'wow' or 'laugh' react on this, so I just put up the 'laugh' one...because dang, it'd be stupid if they skipped identifying the character and head straight to the action.

Now I understand why you'd fume about it.

That is just jealously played for laughs, but they overexaggerated it as usual.

Ps. Thanks to the whole dressing room shit, my habit of knocking on closed doors had been fully reinforced.

Also, I got shitted on by folks when I opened the door or failed to lock the door. So yeah.

System novels where the system regularly demands stuff of the protagonist on penalty of death. 9/10 times any other reason for quest start would be better. Even just promising a boring reward or because they felt like doing it.

I've always asked this question if I don't understand something.
:blob_hmm_two: :blob_cookie:
I did, but I remember dropping xianxia not because of the characters and the settings themselves, but because I keep on reading and reading and reading and reading and reading...until I noticed I'm not getting anywhere in the story (around chapters 500 to 700).
Xianxia is really only good when you want to find something mildly funny to read for ~200 chapters, :blob_cookie:

I love comedy, and I also love light-hearted stories. However, I also wanted the story I read to progress, not just focus on the comedy, and progress at a reasonable pace...

...not read entire scores of chapters (around 1k words) dedicated to only one ridiculously long scene where the MC is just walking from city A to city B.

I wonder if this chapter qualifies for that:
Walk-on character is trapped, abducted and then killed without understanding why.
...and it's a mistake, he's not the droid they're looking for.

Pregnancy. Chucking in a character suddenly getting pregnant for some kind of shock tactic/plot twist just smacks of lazy writing to me now. Seen it so many times it's getting boring, there's many other ways of adding interesting occurrences and many other kinds of dramas that could happen.

OP characters literally having no vulnerability whether it be physical, mental or both then ALL OF A SUDDEN, they have a complete breakdown for no apparent reason and that's it, probably just because the writer was made aware of it and threw in a quick fix. My main female character in Living in the Fray is OP af, but she suffers physically and mentally; this can bee seen because I wrote her damn backstory to show why that happens and why she can be such an insufferable prick. ?

But if the party has the only map of the dangerous currents linked to live sensor data to find the path through the dangerous area, please don't Deus Ex Machina the cavalry in at the last moment.
Someone is still bitter about TRoS, I see.
