Not all pirates were gay, but most of the lady pirates were lesbians (a statement that is mostly wishful thinking on my part, but there actually were quite a lot of female exclusive pirate crews, a consequence of how European women had extremely few opportunities for career advancement in 1500~1700). Pirate was also one of the best jobs available to further your education until late in the 1700s, and literacy rates among pirates were as much as ten times that of the general public (because you never knew when the navigator would die in combat, you had to have ready replacements literate enough to read maps and chart a course).
