First we have to establish the difference between Patreon and one-time donation services. I mean, the difference is obvious, but the reason for why one would set up Pay Pal vs Patreon is where the argument seems to be seeded.
As a non-Patreon user, I can only guess that Patreon is better for authors who intend on pushing out tons of extra exclusive content on the regular, which would already be difficult to set up for anyone who is not well known, though mayhap easy for anyone with a strong existing following.
Since I fight for time every single day, it just isn't my way. I lean on Kofi and PayPal for donations to my works, because it is easier this way for both the author and the reader. I think Kofi runs through paypal anyone, with the perk being far easier for the donater to send money. Being paid to be an author is very tough though; it is literally the job that almost never pays, sadly.
Also, pro-tip, even though RR only allows for PayPal donations (and maybe patreon) on their dashboard features, it doesn't mean you are only locked into Paypal. I throw a reminder with a custom hyperlink at the end of each book segment. Since it's at the very end of some 'last chapters,' it's never in anyone's face or annoying, and if the reader makes it to the end, ideally, they would understand what they would be paying for.
