Nightmare Triggers

Yesterday was the second time this week I had a nightmare. This led me to wonder what caused this sudden increase. Yes, I get them frequently, but not this frequently. Not so much as three days in between. I had doubts that venting my frustrations in the forum had anything to do with it either. At least, there was no direct influence. So exactly what was it? The answer reveals itself to be what I already knew.

To put it bluntly and embarrassingly, I'm afraid of doors. I don't like staring at doors for a prolonged period of time when I'm about to retire, for it has spawned nasty sleep paralysis and nightmares in the past—multiple times since I was a kid. So I try to avoid it, and it wasn't the case for the recent two events for it to be apparent.

On those nights, I forgot to lock my room door before heading to bed. The result of rainy and windy weather made it so that it'd occasionally make noise that was very clearly audible. I suspect this was subconsciously responsible for the recent cases. Yes, I agree this is a bit farfetched, but that's what I could come up with after analyzing the recent nightmare.

The location was my apartment.

The time was midnight after I woke up from sleep and went to the restroom.

What happened was that I decided to peek through the peephole, and there was a guy. I scrambled up to lock my door, but when you want something to not happen in a dream, alas, that's exactly what happens.

Am I just crazy? Do you know of any similar triggers?

Edit: why did I post this in reader general :<

Dreams are all triggered by subconscious thoughts you may have had today or a few days ago. Something that made an impression gets twisted into your dream. It could've been a fluffy bunny, but your psyche makes it into a demonic monster trying to hunt you down. In your case, your fear of doors is something you'll always have on the back of your head; hence, dream about it when something happens even if it was more than a few weeks ago.

You aren't crazy, but your brain is on overdrive! :blob_aww:

I never had nightmares for the last 8-10 year.

In my childhood days,

After severa days of nightmare and bad dreams, I have finally got angry and dreamed about killing and destroying the nightmare ghost with Machine gun like rambo once in my dream,

And the ghost never show up again.

These days,

I cant really remember my dream.

But if i try, most of them are quite sad and depressing.

You're not crazy.

As I mentioned on another weird dream post, I will dream about zombies if my body gets cold (or if I roll into an uncomfortable position). I'm anemic so when I get cold, I stay cold so I guess this became my brain's surefire way to wake me up as I am an utter coward and zombies scare the crap out of me.

In addition to that, I have a recurring nightmare that is usually brought on by stress. It is always the same stretch of woods that I got chased into as a child by an older neighbour. He was also shouting that he was going to kill me just to scare me. Which, obviously, it worked because that place is seared into my subconscious. Everything else in the nightmare might be different (everything from the Troll from Ernest Scared Stupid to zombies) but it's always those same woods.

Dreams and nightmares are the ways our subconscious deals with things. Sometimes, our subconscious sucks.

Haha, your dreams are far better than me. I get nightmares almost everyday, whenever I fall asleep. I'm scared of sleeping now.
