Hi everyone,

I'm a new Author, I have started writing not long ago (about 2 years back). I have a main novel I'm working on but I'm not confident enough yet to start publishing it :rolleyes:Since I feel the story is better and It still excites me to write

Since I was scared to start publishing it yet, I wrote several Short stories, Not good as above, but entertaining.

I was planning to begin uploading them first, Just to get used to the platform and online publication things. My main goal is the story I've been writing for 2 yrs (At the middle of 2nd draft {A complete rewrite:cry:}.

This platform does not pay, right? So the only way that I can earn money if possible is from Patreon, right?

I created a patreon account too. And I'm willing Even to create a youtube, tiktok and facebook accounts for Marketting  Mostly to get an Idea about marketting. Can anyone please suggest me ideas for marketing a book via these platforms

I can't understand how a book can be marketed?

Also whether what I'm going for is ok? Writing few short stories and (possibly have an idea to try out writing fanfics too :giggle: ) to gather an audience before starting to publish the novel

If someone can help. Would be a great help
Thank you in Advance

From the perspective of a reader, short stories alone are unlikely to get you many readers, especially not regular ones, and even less ones willing to pay for Patreon.
For SH specifically, and perhaps other sites like it, once you stop uploading chapters for a story, you won't be getting any exposure to it other than through your signature or random recommendations. For short stories especially this means few people will even notice they exist unless they are looking for short stories specifically. Then there's the part where Most readers wait for certain number of chapters to be up before even starting a story, usually around 20-50-100 chapters, so even if they see it, they might not ever return to it unless they bookmark it.
To truly build up readership, you need something longer to attract them and keep them in, preferably with regular updates.

As for fanfictions, be aware that making money from them is illegal basically everywhere, and while you can see plenty of writers making money off them on Patreon, all it takes is one report and the entire account can be taken down... that's not to stop you, just keep that in mind if you go down that road.

That aside, I'm sure there are actual authors who can offer better advice on marketing yourself.

Technically no, there is no forced payment or obligation to pay an author. The only way we authors can get paid here (excluding patreon specials), is asking for readers to donate to our linked donation settings, if they enjoy the story. And don't forget to NOT ask for this inside the content context of any work that is deemed as fanfic.

Like people said, sell what you have.
Try release the short stories under one title, so you will have longer visibility.
And use that anthology works to promote your main novel by putting link inside it and vice versa.

Now you basically have two long forms that help promote each other
