Note: Only asking here cuz a lot of anime have very similar themes and concepts, so despite having a strong candidate in mind i cant be sre its the one im thinking of since it doesnt hit all the boxes i recall it having
Long story short a buddy(?) on discord and i were talking about Platinum En'd ending and i commented, "well thats shitty but i expected that to happen anyway MC said he was gonna do that. Just came with collateral. Least he wasnt stuck in some bullshit where he was destined to get killed by his bestie or the world and everyone he loves gets killed. Now that tomfuckery did blindside me"
He asked, "wait whats that from? sounds interesting"
Me: "I forgot, need to look it up,"
An hour later and the closest thing i can find that resembles what anime i was talking about is one called X but a few things dont quite fit
From what i recall, MC had no idea about any supernatural shit in the anime i recall. From my memory, MC was just a normal highschool kid who had a best friend. Then somehow he was made aware he was supposed to save the world. That he and his best friend were destined to recruit all these guys fight, one team tryna find and break some seals and the world would end. His bestie basically started going evil, mainly due to his destiny messing with his mind (or he was being possessed by a previous incarnation of himself/memories of his past life, dunno)
(this part is iffy) So in my mind MC had two choices. Either he becomes evil, or his friend does. This may not be true, cant recall exactly. What i DO recall, is In the end it turns out that MC never had a chance. His best friend (or maybe just whichever of them was evil) would always win the battle no matter what. So the only way to protect the world and his friends, he had to sacrifice himself and place a shield around the entire earth. If the part of him being able to choose to be evil is right, then it wouldnt matter as his friend would win anyway. (maybe his bestie would also be the one to die by sacrificing himself in this case, i dunno) So basically, he would die no matter what, maybe even his bestie would die in a mutual destruction type thing, But at the very least he could choose to be good himself and save everyone.
It was definitely a bittersweet ending. There may have been time loop stuff going on where MC erecting that shield is what broke the loop. Cant remember. But it definitely ended with a shiel being put up around the earth.
And see, this "X" anime i spoke of does seem to fit most of the boxes, but that MC knows about all the destiny stuff and how the two groups need to battle it out to determine the fate of the world. But from what I remember, the MC of the story im thinking of didnt know anything at the start.
