Which is more popular?

A straightforward story or a story with lots of twists

Does genre also matter?

You don't need to overthink twist or straightforward story, just go with what comes to your mind.

As for genre, living in my bubble I'd say Mystery is on the rise, as well as evil mc.

I like stories without twists. And I think stories without twists are more popular to webnovel readers.

Small twists are amazing, you want a lot of them. Common twists, like the nice guy actually being the villain, is also good. But big twists like changing the genre? Or suddenly changing the protagonist and killing the old one off? If you're not careful, readers will leave in droves. You have to execute it well.

I think a better distinction is whether a story is predictable or not. Straightforward stories can be unpredictable, stories with twists can be predictable - the key is to write a story that is somewhat predictable so that readers don't get lost and confused with the changing narrative, but not enough to make it boring and stale.

Once that is achieved, I think straightforward stories will be more popular, but that will heavily depend on the genre.

I don't mind a story having a few twists... as long as the characters are mostly on the same page as the reader.

What I don't like is when I start getting the feeling that everyone but the main characters and the readers know what is going on, or when the plot has more twists than a roller coaster. That isn't fun.
