Name a trope or genre you wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole in your writing

Ok, sorry, rereading that I didn't word it well and it was a very rambly thought anyways. In my defence it was very hot in Australia today and I got low-key heatstroke earlier, and it's getting late.

I think people want to project on characters who are very successful with the opposite sex. I don't think Harem is a realistic or emotionally healthy way to explore this because the relationships are too asymmetric.
Instead, in my opinion, I think characters should be allowed to just get laid (or kiss, or share a moment, whatever), then move on as friends or strangers.
Sorry if I'm still not explaining myself well.

Get well, and stay hydrated.

Yeah, the point is, it won't be self-insert mary sue character anymore, if a lover would leave their side. Anyway, a lot of harems are popular not because they are realistic or healthy. In case of realism, readers don't want it to be real. If it's real, it's no longer an escapism. As for health, they don't think about it.

I agree.
But I think you can make a Mary Sue Self Insert who gets sum in an emotionally mature way, that respects all parties. Maybe I'm a wet blanket though.

Also, sorry for derailing the thread. As a token effort at rerailing I wouldn't want to write a Gamelit because dealing with the numbers seems like a chore.

Hmm, I don't think there's anything I won't try if it's appropriate. I guess the closest would be misery porn. A bit of tragedy for the sake of a story is okay, but I'm not interested in a cascade of misery

Tournaments. Obviously personal opinion and I am sure it can be used well. Just hate how it is used as filler and way to introduce these characters you might or might not find interesting. Most if not a large selection of these characters will never be seen or heard from again but can take multiple chapters that takes you away from the story.

"Banished from the party". I wasn't bullied while growing up so I don't have enough spite to draw inspiration from.

I think the popularity of the harem genre is in large part due to juvenile male (and female sometimes too) desire to have relations with lots of people–which I relate too–but keeping them all around as collectables after is not normal or in my opinion a healthy idea.
If you want your self-insert/audience-insert to be popular with the ladies, make him popular with the ladies. Just don't imply the ladies are just sooo into him that they're cool hanging onto his arm no matter what he does with who. That feels demeaning. Like respect and affection don't need to be reciprocated.
My two cents anyway.
Oh... Now I see. Thanks.

  • Smut/erotica, for religious and personal reasons.
  • LitRPG, because I find the numbers to be pointless and annoying. I also have a difficult time enjoying writing it.
  • Power fantasy, because it's not for me. I don't want a power trip so I have a problem writing characters from a power abusing mentality. It can also be very easy to make the character a Mary Sue without realizing it.
Cthulu has something against smut? My cult chapter doesn't
Female lead: I'm a man, and wouldn't know where to begin, all female dialogues and issue in my story gets proofed by my gf.
Bl/gl: not gay
Trans mc: let's not go there as to why
Ntr: I don't share
Music: I couldn't carry a tune in a locked safe
Romance: I don't feel strong emotions

I do however plan to write:
Fanfiction: Neji shouldn't have died
Historical-fantasy: I'm a history buff, dating a history major
Sci-fi: grew up on Star Trek, Stargate, Star Wars and Andromeda
War: I volunteer with disabled veterans, with permission I plan to fictionalize their war stories and share their post war trauma
Historical-realistic: well... other than a modern day genius ending up in 1600 north America and the other being human time traveling and getting stuck in a timeliness where the asteroid missed... there will be no magic.
Politic: I am a political journalist, I've walked the halls of the most corrupt organization on earth.

For things I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole:
GL/BL
GB
Netorare/Netorase

Things I tend to avoid, but can still get into sometimes:
Female Lead
Stupid/Dense Protagonists

Anything beyond background romance, definitely no smut. My willingness to read romance varies, so writing it is a no go. But also, my writing borders on middle grade. I also don't think I have ever written a male protagonist, though it's not something I consciously avoid.

Smut. Don't really want to write that genre, and I know I would be terrible at writing it.

I hate stories that have the troupe where the mc shares their body with maelovent entity thats constantly fighting for control. Think that shit is irrating to read. It's a constant conflict that exists at fore front of the story, but often isn't solved until the very end.

And it's usually resolved after the mc loses all agency and has to regain it. Which just feels cheap to me when I read it. It feels like that scene in Austin Powers where the guy stands in front of the steamroller and waits like a whole minute just to get run over.

It's usually some demon character that conflicts with the mc that isn't in any way likeable. Usually they have no dimension to the character other than evil for sake of evil.
