So, to train myself on writing more slow stories to keep action to a minimal, I've started my first arc on the novel, making soap because medieval people smelt like shit.

Honestly, I'm surprised they don't acknowledge the fact that soap was terrible for your skin back then during Medieval times, so I'm having the MC try making good soap for the skin first before he does any extra stuff.

That's actually great idea for the story! It remind me a lot of KCD 1 and 2 where Soap is important for charisma! :blobrofl: :blobrofl: :blobrofl: :blobrofl:

Sounds like you need to read some middle grade books. 50k-55k words to see how to be concise and not feel like you are rushing or going at a snail's pace.

Sounds cool! But medieval people actually highly valued good hygiene:
  • Public bathhouses were very common for people of all social levels, especially in the later medieval periods. These were social spaces, and also had medical practioners there. Sometimes connected to bakeries to use the excess heat for hot water
  • People used linen clothes to scrub their teeth, along with herbs for fresh breath. Research has shown that medieval people had lower rates of tooth decay compared to now
  • Soap was available and used. There were soap guilds in cities. Mostly tallow soap, or white soap if you're richer
  • The church even promoted the idea that cleanliness is next to godliness
  • Most people used a sponge to bathe daily, or a towel to wash their hands face and nethers
  • Medieval people used herbs and oils for pleasant smells
  • They used a variety of grooming tools. Combs, tweezers, razors, hand held mirrors ect

Edit: Your idea is actually good! Its just a pet peeve of mine when people say that medieval people smelled bad, or had bad hygiene. In many ways they managed to have good hygiene without absolutely devastating the natural world like we do in modern times

1. I'm aware, they were just terrible form what I heard and watched videos about
2. I didn't know that
3. I am aware, but it often irritated the skin
4. Nice, I'll add that in the story
5. How disgusting, I bet they didn't have face and body towels separate
6. I'll remove that from my world just to make the kingdom building more fun
7. Already have that
Thank you for the recommendation

One of the more well-known experiments on hygiene was from one of the cast members of Downtown Abbey. The consensus was that scrubbing vigorously with a wet towel over problem areas like the armpits and nethers with only water was fine due to the layers of clothes people tended to wear.

Most of the poor hygiene stuff was from after the medieval period, IIRC - though the cities themselves were filthy, horrible places most of the time, the people themselves were fairly clean (kind of like how cats are very clean animals but leave their surroundings a disaster).
Later civilization made more use of perfumes than cleaning products, in the upper class, but the lower class, if they were in an area with running water (either clean natural water or actual plumbing) were often cleaner. In the cities, however, like London, the local water was a horrorshow and anyone using it without boiling first was inviting disaster more often than not (the Thames caught fire at least once during the early industrial age due to the filth in it).
Leo Frantkoswki dealt with this a little bit, at least in Medieval Poland, with the Conrad Stargard stories (The Crosstime Engineer, et. al.), as Conrad was surprised at how clean and yet unsanitary things were and one of his side projects (other than finding a way to help everyone survive the impending Mongol invasion) was to fix the hygiene issue.

Hahaha, public bathhouses actually very similar to the brothel in medieval periods. So they came for good time not just to bath.
