Hey, what is your opinion on writing multiple stories at the same time? I am writing a fanfiction that is a great fun, but now I have this one idea about another story, an original this time. I don't know if I should just write them at the same time. I have three days off work, and my hamster brain is like a kid in a candy shop. A kid who has gotten just two dollars from her parents, and must decide between chocolate with raisins, and chocolate with biscuits.

It's fun. I have heard it becomes problematic if you begin writing more than 2 stories, but I know an author who does that as well.

I have been writing my main story for a bit more than half a year now. Honestly, it has become a bit of a chore to write it, as it has more than 300k words of preestablished world in it. It takes time and a lot of consideration to finish a single chapter.

So, I started a new one - a joke story.
It's smut, it's all tropes, it's harem.
I can put all the ideas I can't in the main story in the joke one.

And it has helped me to write the main one, as I can get the stupidity out of the system while writing the harem smut.

Don't unless you decide to have a backlog. It is a mistake I am currently working on.

I have enough books as backlog to last me for about 3-4 months worth of posting.

I will advise based on my experience. Don't. It's sometimes difficult, especially when you're trying to stick to a schedule. If one of the stories is more comical and less time-consuming to create, you can. But for me it’s easier to just finish one story and start another.

Multiple stories at the same time ≠ Multiple running series at the same time

The best way to utilize it is by writing multiple one-shot.

And so you can actually improve your writing without affecting the story too much.

Unlike long series, which would feel different dependent on writer's growth during time of writing for each chapter. Being on writing-edit hell loop sue to constantly learning something new is not fun.

I’ve currently got a story that is my attempt to be more serious (I mean it still has a harem and a system, but I’m keeping the harem smol and trying to keep things reasonable and characterized) and one that is smutty and frequently sociopathic in the same vein as my first story ever posted.
The smutty one is basically something to do when I’m waiting for my proofreader to run through the one I take seriously. I try to not touch it unless I’ve met my weekly quota of pirate shenanigans. I release pirates on a schedule, while smuttopia is very irregular and I only release it in batches when I finish an arc so I don’t have to worry about leaving someone hanging in the middle of a storyline.

Sist, work on what you want to work.

You know what? If you still have no preferences, what about writing the original story and keep it flowing till you published the fifth chapter.

Then, you can decide which story is better to focus on.

But, if you're asking me, well...

I DEMAND YOU TO WRITE THE FANFICTION MORE, MWAHAHHAHAHA! FANFICTION FOR LIVING, HELL YEAH!

My guy, if I were your reader, I would have my soul teared apart bit by bit just by reading your story.

I do hope you improve your grammatical. It may not be your preference as of now, but you'll surely gather more readers.

If you're writing for fun or as a hobby, write whatever you want.

Is the serious answer.

The joke answer is Run and Save yourself from drowning in hundreds of WIP stories. XD

I did this in 2018, I was writing six stories at the same time, updating them with one or two chapters each day.

They did okay but I found myself burnt out rather quickly, and with little time to focus on any of the stories. So I paused most of them to commit to one story at a time.

Some people can do it, but likely they plan ahead for it. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners, but writing several stories can be a method to attract readers and followers who enjoy your work.
