so, if the swords are entirely monatomic, then they're probably made of a pretty stiff material or they'd just be floppy and not swords. Most materials like that have a small elastic range and almost no plastic range, so most likely if the collision is enough to compromise the edge, both swords would fail catastrophically and either crumple or break.

If just the blade edge is monatomic, then the story changes. Chances are the edge is very hard, but the remainder of the blade has some toughness. In that case, both edges will probably come away with a nasty chip in the edge, and if they're unlucky, a cracked blade.

Iirc that's how thin the edge actuall is. And in fact is how it cuts. Cuz its it's so thin that it separates atoms or something. I remember this from watching a video about Wolverine's claws and why the girl from Logan would have better cutting power due to her having two claws instead of three like Wolverine's.

The video went into detail on exactly what "cutting" actually is.
Duh, isn't it kinda obvious how cutting works? Its just common sense.
