Setting:
  • You are a queen in her 30.
  • You loved your husband a lot since you too were very young.
  • Fifteen years ago, your husband listened to the baseless slander of a corrupted noble and executed your parents along with a lot of your estate's employees with the accusation of treason.
  • You and your brothers were exiled to barren outland which resulted in the death of your siblings and the loss of one of your eyes and arms.
  • Your older sister, wife of a foreign king, was trapped in a scheme by your husband's aide because your kingdom was afraid that she would incite a war between the 2 nations out of vengeance. She was abandoned by her husband and died while being "escorted" back to her homeland.
  • The foreign king was shocked by his wife's unexpected death and was not in the correct mental stage to look after his children with his late wife.
  • Your niece, therefore, committed suicide not long after because of the negligence of her father and the abuse of the nobles and the other imperial children.
  • When everything was revealed, your foolish husband begged you to forgive him.
  • You in your broken stage were torn between your past love and your hatred. You only wanted to die.
  • However, your death would also bring your husband to commit suicide along.
  • Your husband's aide, and long time friend with the both of you, could not allow the kingdom without its ruler.
  • He brainwashed you without your husband's knowledge. He destroyed all but the happy memories between you and your husband.
  • After all those years living with the brainwashing spell, you finally remembered the past, even the moment your "friend" manipulated your mind.
  • You confronted both your husband and your "friend".
  • The secret was out of the bag and he was imprisoned waiting for his punishment. He didn't care about his death now because...
  • ...you now had a son and a daughter, both under 8 years old. The reign will continue even with your and the king's death.
  • He was ashamed of what he did but given a second chance he would have brainwashed you for loyalty to the kingdom was his creed.

Prompt: All the people who had a hand in your tragedy are now waiting silently for your next course of action from your husband to the imprisoned aide. You are considering ending your suffering, and, therefore, you need only to deal with the final knot in the entire thing, breaking the news to your innocent children about what their mother will do and explain the reason. It would not be easy because yesterday was the happy day, their birthday and your anniversary.

If I am so silly and sweet as to be "torn between your past love and your hatred" after all that shit, I'd probably forgive them.

Careful, almost delicate footsteps echoed through the hallways as Althea walked toward her children’s room. With each step, her mind fought with itself, telling her not to, that there was still a chance to fix everything. To pretend that everything was still normal, as it always had been. She had already taken drastic actions that were hard to forgive, the plan took 2 years to set in motion, but she knew that her former husband would never forgive her because he believed that there was nothing to forgive and that his was a well-deserved punishment.

And she hated that. She hated that he still dared to love her. For her burning love was already burnt out, leaving a bitter pile of dust.

Althea stopped in front of a room and stared at the door handle. It had been replaced to accommodate the loss of her right arm, to ease the struggle of her remaining arm. She placed the glass with the tallow candle on the table to her left. Her right eye closed as she took a deep breath before opening the door.

“Hello, Alth and Thea.” Althea greeted the boy reading in a chair before looking at the girl lying on the bed. The room was lit by a lamp. She picked up her tallow candle before entering the room.

“Ah, Mama, welcome,” the girl greeted with a wave of her hand.

“Greetings, Your Highness,” the boy said as he bowed.

“Am I interrupting?” Althea asked as she smiled at them.

“No, we’re in the best part. Come, listen with me as Brother finishes the story.”

“Thea, the queen may be tired for the day, so be more receptive.”

“It’s all right, Alth. I am here to spend the night with both of you.” Althea said as she walked over to the bed before blowing out the candle and sitting down on the bed.

“Please, continue.”

Alth looked at her mother for a few more moments before he looked down at the book in his hand and read aloud. He read with emotion as he told the story of a king’s unconditional love for his queen.

Even though his kingdom saw their queen as evil, the king stood by her and did his best to clear her family’s name. And he succeeded, the evil stigma was removed, and they lived happily ever after.

“Yay! Dad really loves Mom!”

Althea smiled. Bitterly.

“In fact, he even immortalized our love by writing it in a book for the world to read,” she said, sounding as proud as she could.

“Be sure to be a proper princess if you want a husband who will shower you with love. We have our own ideal queen too,” he said, glaring at Althea. “Make sure you always call him your king.”

“I‘m so jealous. I want a husband like Dad,” Thea said. “Do you think Dad will like the embroidered cloth I sewed?”Althea‘s heart tightened.

“I’m sure he will.”

Alth closed the book before standing up.

“That’s it for tonight. I bid you farewell, Your Highness.”

“I will stay for the night.” Althea declared. Alth’s face morphed into a surprise.

“Really?” Thea hugged back.

“Really, really.” She rested her chin on her daughter’s crowning hair.

“The bed might not be big enough for three.”

“Then we’ll snuggle closer.”

“Yes, brother. It won’t be a problem.”

“Why now?”

“I just want to sleep with my children before the extended party tomorrow.”

...

Alth took a deep breath.

“Very well.”

They lay together, cuddling. Thea enjoyed every moment of hugging her mother.

“If the insignia had never happened, would their love have remained strong?” Alth mused.

“Of course, brother. Dad always loved mama.”

He huffed.

“I suppose.”

Althea closed her right eye, feeling the warmth of her daughter on her right side. She was surprised to feel arms hugging her before something cold dripped down her neck. Her left arm moved to comfort her son.

Ah, her husband raised his son well. It made her proud to have a son like Alth.

If It hadn’t happened, she would have loved her king lavishly. They would be the perfect family. Unfortunately, she hated him. She hated him so much that she would rather kill herself than love him. But sadly, that would be the end of the kingdom. The lies the king hid would come out and her children would suffer. For them, she would do everything.

So tomorrow she would act like a madwoman, to play like the vile woman she was in the storybook. To let everyone know that she was really beyond redemption and that her husband was the victim. He won’t fight, he knew the plan, and it pained him to know her plan, but he knew how much she wanted to die. So he was willing to be stabbed for her, to be sentenced to death. She hated to die and be branded by what had destroyed her life. She hated that she would never see her children grow up. But she was tired, so she was willing to bear the brand she hated so much.

For an end is an end.
