“…and it was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. May that be truly said of us, and all of us. God bless us, everyone.”

Watching Ebeneezer Scrooge, played by Alistair Sim in our favorite version called “Scrooge” from 1951, transform from a miserly, covetous, angry, bitter old man, into a youthful, free-spirited joyful and kind person is the stuff of miracles. That’s the true meaning of Christmas; not just about celebrating the birthday (Okay, technically the birth was in summer, but why in the world would we celebrate Christmas in summer?!) of a man who taught us how to love one another, care for our fellow people, and live in a way that is exactly how we’re supposed to live every day of our lives.

Only for some reason, we only do it for a few days, 12 days at the maximum.

You want to know when Christmas begins for me? Right after Halloween. *^^*

We put away our pumpkins and decorations and immediately settle into Thanksgiving time, when all the big sales are starting up and there’s so much you can get for so little. Black Friday especially; people aren’t shopping for post-Thanksgiving presents, you know! *^^*

One of my favorite quotes from “Scrooge” is this one, from the Ghost of Christmas Present:

“We Spirits of Christmas do not live only one day of our year. We live the whole three-hundred and sixty-five. So is it true of the Child born in Bethlehem. He does not live in men's hearts one day of the year, but in all days of the year…”

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, and however you wish to see it, whether he was indeed the son of God, or made lame people walk, or blind people see, or even was crucified and rose again, that’s all Christmas is. Without him being born, there is no Christmas.

It’s not just the spirit of Saint Nicholas that comes into our hearts when we help someone walk across a congested street or smile warmly watching someone open our present. That’s also the spirit of Christ within us. A man who would have gladly walked someone across a dusty road or smile warmly watching someone accept a gift from him.

And we really need to do better. So often, I’ve watched the transformation in people all around me. They change from bitter, angry selves into wonderful, giving and kind people.

And then, sadly, they change right back to their bitter, angry selves again. =(

But why do we do that? Why do we not find it in our hearts to continue being kind to our fellows, generous, and thoughtful? It feels like Christmas is some sort of “intermission”, doesn’t it?

We watch our lives play out on a universal stage, and then in December, we head to the exits to drink, make merry, and talk to each other kindly.

And then we head back to watch the rest of the play until next year. =(

Sounds insane, doesn’t it? People shouldn’t be at their best for just one or 12 days – they should be at their best always. There’s nothing at all wrong with celebrating Christmas all year.

It doesn’t have to be an intermission – an “excuse” for us to be kinder and more thoughtful.

Think about that, please.

A late but very Merry Christmas to those who celebrate, and the happiest of days to those that celebrate something else – or do not celebrate at all. May the New Year be your best yet.
