As someone who writes cringy mind control smut fanfic with pretensions toward other genres, I agree it works well in smut. Obviously.
More importantly, it works best as an advertised central element. Getting blindsided by mind control, especially the kind of mind control that seriously alters someone’s personality or opinions, can be really upsetting.
If, in contrast, the mind control is so well established and so well understood by the reader that they are expecting it? You can really play with points of view, perception, personality, and how different aspects of the mind can interconnect.
Consensual and/or self inflicted mind control are also a whole realm of exciting and morally grey mind fuckery. Using it on someone else non consensually absolutely requires that you turn in your good person card even if you brainwash villains into running orphanages.
