Excuse me, I'm new to the Manhua genre. Can people explain to me what cultivation and sect is? What are their functions?

Manhua (Manhwa) is chinese/korean manga. That is all to it.

Cultivation and sect stories are mostly associated with Chinese books. Take them as a genre of stories. Just like isekai, romcom, sci-fi, etc.

Think of them as Chinese fantasy stories as they are most prevalent there.

Edit:

To say a bit more: cultivation stories are usually about people cultivating their bodies and powers, to get stronger or reaching immortality. Going from your average Joe to Superman. Sects are usually the place where they start their journey. It is a group of super strong people, raising up other strong pupils to a higher level. They can be good or evil, with different attributes, affinities etc.

Manhua is chinese, manhwa is korean, manga is japanese.

Cultivation is basically a set of practice that featured meditation and yoga-ese movement that allows the practitioner to evolve beyond human limits.

Sect is a gang/ mafia family/ school.

Cultivation is to meditate to open your chakra points and gates. Cultivation is usually done to ascend to godlyhood. A sect is a smaller part of religion. Just like how Christians are either catholics or protestants; the cultivation sects follow different methodology to cultivate.

Cultivation is the art of doing drugs, giving everything needlesly long names full of the words heaven, hell, dead and other words every edgy teen seems to love, and generally having everyone act like Hitler, The Zodiac Killer and every incarnation of negative afterlife were decent beings. Think of Dragon Ball but instead of eating food, Goku would take drugs and behave like Vegeta when ge was introduced.

Example a "normal" burning fist would be called "heavenly hellish hellfist of grand hell's helping heavens heap" or something.

A sect is a place where those psychos come together to torture, badmouth and try to kill each other. They normally have control over everything since having a group of psychos rule has never not been a good idea.

They are normally found in stories that are about the MC being the least decent human being they can.

Thank you for the link!

I wonder just how many of these concepts occur in other works without necessarily bearing the same names.

In my opinion LitRPG = Cultivation, so a lot.
Imo they are just there to tell the readers "hey, power levels" like those in magic users and their circles and core colors. So yeah, LitRPG.

It is all about how the authors can fluff up the grind, instead of just make the numbers go higher. Like in cultivation in Herding Gods, MC literally has to do a spiritual leap of faith to ascend to godhood instead of the usual getting struck by lightning.

I personally think it is fun to see the authors' hardwork in fleshing out their system.

that naming surely help those authors with stretching the word count? Yes?!
example
"Dao Tze reached his internal core of yellow stage with Iron body strengthening level and higher state of mind and soul tempering to draw ki and power up the "heavenly hellish hellfist of grand hell's helping heavens heap"

Everyone keeps forgeting that heavenly hellish hellfist of grand hell's helping heavens heap can be like 1-2 symbols in chinese.
