There is a problem in this question: couse you dont say if you prefer a male or female MC as reader or if as a writer...
THere is quite a diference.
You see as a reader I dont care, as long as the story is good and the character is well writen.
As a writer I prefer males, why? Becouse I am a man... I dont know how to be a woman, there is stuff that just scape my grasp.
Male. I'm burnt out on that girl-power nonsense.
That is just bad writing. No one shit on Samus (metroid), Rippley (alien), B2 (nier automata), Rebecca (black lagoon) all the psycho girls from Claymore... etc etc etc.

Honestly, at this point, I'm sick of how many stories have a poorly written female protagonist.

Don't get me wrong, some are excellent eg: "My Disciple Died Yet Again" (YOUR SISTER is "Desire")

But others... I just have to pretend that it's a poor translation, and the gender got mixed up. Case in point: for "A Cat, a Thief, & a Wizard" - I just read the MC cat voice as a male 2-bit gangster from the Bronx, with a 47.5 IQ

Am I the only guy in the world who preferred A2? The long-haired version of course.

I've never liked the short-hair or pixie-look as some call it, on women.
I just mentioned characters, I really dont care what they look like, I am not into erotic fantasy with some imaginary character... I am not into anything, I am too old for that crap.

In a perfect world, genderless.
Imperfect world... Thinking on my favorites historically I think more were male on average? But only slightly, so I don't think its that substantial.
The less I have to think about the main characters gender the better generally, unless theres some redeeming quality of the interactions.

I prefer the ladies, but looking at my reading list it's more guys. I'm aromantic, so I steer clear of romance heavy and harem stuff. Which doesn't leave much on the table to pick from.

Male mainly because I can't relate to the female ones in most of them. The stories then revolve around romance or drama. But I do like reading those Jane Austen kind of books. The female pov feels unique there. I hope there would be better stories with female protagonist. There are good shows though.
