Longer or Shorter Chapters?

That's why I break up my chapters into shorter chunks, b/c my chapters range from 6k to 20k words. To make thing easier on myself, I numbered all the scenes in these chapters, which means that I have an easier time breaking up each chapter into suitable 3k-word chunks, give or take 1k every now and then. That's for the one I'm currently posting (and writing) after taking a break from it since the end of last year.

For my newest work (that I haven't posted on here), I'm going for much shorter chapters of around 2k to 2.5k (hopefully no more than 3k) and chunking them into installments of around 1k to 1.5k words each. Hopefully that will make it easier for readers.

My story about slice of life, isekai-fantasy with no magic, so I usually write between 700-1.600 words. I think it depends on genre of your story you pick.

It doesn't always. Slice-of-life s can all be different lengths. I personally think that writing around 2k words give or take per chap would be fine for anything. That would allow you to include a lot of the ideas you may want into the chapter without having lost all of your creativity. Some stories go well with less than 1k words, while others are centered around the chapter being long.


It all depends on the writers of the novels. A writer decides their schedule for themselves and the contents of their chaps.

I haven't written much. A few stories for chapters I wrote may be over 2k words. I make chapters and cut them if I feel like they're are starting to move on to a different chapter/scene/plot than the previous chapter, or if it is too long. But honestly, it depends.
