Light wins the war. I've declared it victory.
Now let's move on.

Light in it of itself is just photons that are often emitted alongside heat, since infrared is also a type of light. I've been wondering how light as a super power would actually work since it has very little weight. It's not like it could actually cure diseases unless it's a fictional type of light.

You have not been reading enough Chinese BS.

First of from Bear Wolf Dog, in his first work, a minor villain has the ability to emit light from his entire body. As his power grows, he can increase its intensity and compress them from entire body to laser pointer style from his finger and eyes. What this means is that he can laser eyes.

Then there is Dr Light, with the ability to create illusions and hard light constructs.

Almost any light based power is either going to have a lot of fine control, is going to focus the light to the point of shooting frickin lasers, or you have the blunt asshole options where you give people cancer with radiation, microwave them, or create flashbangs without the bang. Not to mention the relatively mundane utility of having infinite flashlight that makes Light one of the most popular cantrips in D&D.
If you have fine control, either as part of the power or through exhaustive anime training montages, then the hyper precision chemotherapy option is on the table, but visual illusions seem way more useful and widely applicable at that point.
All of this is also assuming that the setting puts no metaphysical weight on light and we are strictly discussing the manipulation of photons etc, with a focus on the visible spectrum.

It depends on the limitations of the ability and its magnitude as well as the degree of control the character has over light itself.

Can they only manipulate existing light or can they produce it themselves? In either case, what is the degree of control over the light being manipulated? The most simple use would be to just shoot lasers and beams, but you can also get creative with it and take advantage of photoionization depending on the level of control and just start blasting people with plasma.

Well, I guess photon blaster has a new meaning.

I don't know if I like the illusion angle but that is a definite possibility when you consider invisibility is a refraction of light... makes me think that invisibility is also a light power.

It depend how the rules are made but you can use the light to enhance your speed or even your regeneration ability. You can even use light to dilate the concept of time or manipulate the perception of it.

...

The first half sounds like lightning... lightning because electricity and nerves and exciting cells and BS.

Well there a reason we said light speed. generally in story with elements the best for speed are Wind < Lightning < Light. By using photon you can stimulate cellular processes and repair or regenerate damaged tissues. Photons could trigger specific biological responses, enhancing cell division, DNA repair, and metabolic activities to speed up healing.

This will sound totally like me BSing, but I sort of kind of already guessed that you would answer as such.

So how does time (or the illusion of time) works then?

Light as a weapon is a volatile energy type. Obviously an OP feature is how undodgeable it is.

Its drawback is the easiness of blocking it. Energy weapons have the tendency to discharge their energy in whatever they touch first. In earth atmosphere, intense light will ionize air particles and turn it into an exploding plasma (optical breakdown), which inherently impose a limit on energy density of a single light beam. Think of it like how a high velocity impacter waste energy on breaking the sound wall. The surface of the ionized armor will heat and explode because of the repelling electronic forces, but the energy wont penetrate into the target.

Reflective material can uno reverse your light attacks back at you, which sucks.

Light would perform well in outer space, but in atmosphere, it might be possible to converge multiple light beams into a single target point so that they dont induce optical breakdown during travel.

In space battles, laser beams rekt fighter ships that try fancy dodge maneuver then you switch to bullets when they get closer to finish them off

In conclusion light has OP range and accuracy, but easily blocked by physical hull protection
