Coca cola can claim whatever they want, but common words can't be protected. But if they in any way refer to 'Monster drink' or use their logo, then they have the right to get a lawsuit on.

I do call my zombies different (Inmortu) and they work slightly differently from Zombies, as they can't infect people. They're more flesh golems or reanimated corpses than actual zombies.

Personally I have no qualms about calling them zombies, but if the setting is not modern there could be a disconnect, given that the popularity of the term 'zombies' is a product of pop culture if I am remembering correctly.

Yes, the first usage of the word recorded was around the 1800s, that being said the image of zombies they had at that time were no doubt far different from the horde minded modern zombies that today's culture has popularized.
